It takes faith, trust, courage, and perseverance to serve God in today's unstable world. Yet, we are never alone. Pray every day and pray often. Study the Bible. The Scriptures are a Love Letter from God to those who accept Jesus as their personal Savior. You will receive comfort, knowledge, and wisdom from the Holy Spirit. Renew your Mindset with God series: The Amazing Transformation of our Character.
It was the last week of the spring semester, and as one of the ten remaining nursing students, I looked forward to the 12-week summer vacation to travel, relax, and enjoy a break from the rigorous studies. Around 2 pm, the Director and all of our professors entered our lecture room. We were aware that a meeting between all faculty and students meant that the issue was significant. I can still remember the shock from hearing these words from the Director:
We have received the Board’s approval to initiate an additional summer semester for the nursing program. It is a six-week Clinical rotation, Monday-Friday, from 7 am-3:30 pm, to be conducted in the two hospitals where you are already performing the program’s clinical requirements. Nursing 4 will begin in 10 days. You will be assigned to work under a Registered Nurse and are responsible for two patients’ total care every day. Also, you are required to submit Nursing Care Plans for each of your patients. The summer semester is not an option; it is a modification to the program. If you fail to complete the rotation or have three or more absences, we will withdraw you from the program except under extreme circumstances. I understand that you will have mixed feelings regarding this information. We desire that you are well-equipped to give quality care and possess the highest level of knowledge throughout your career in nursing. You are dismissed for the day.
Since the number of nursing students had dwindled from 27 to 10, we became a close sisterhood. After the meeting, we rushed to the student lounge to discuss the unfairness of being forced to work in the hospital for free. Based on our previous clinical assignments, we anticipated receiving the most challenging patients. As we prepared to leave, we heard a whimper and saw tears streaming down Mary’s face as she embraced each of us and said good-bye. Mary’s husband paid for a non-refundable two-week cruise departing the same week that our Nursing 4 clinical rotation started. She said that enough was enough and that her sacrifice to become a Registered Nurse was over.
I must admit those six-weeks were extremely hard. We were assigned patients that required total personal care. They could not bathe or dress and required transfer from bed to recliner chairs twice during the shift. The admission and discharge turnover was high that summer. New patients quickly replaced our previously assigned patients. It was school policy that new patients have completed nursing care plans within 24 hours. After a brutal day, we had to put in additional time to develop care plans at home.
Nevertheless, the nine of us who endured Nursing 4 had excellent nursing preceptors who taught us organizational skills we would use in future practice. We also learned the advantages of working as a team toward the same goals. And the most rewarding aspect was that our patients eagerly looked forward to receiving compassionate care from their Student Nurses. We did not want to admit the Nursing Administration of our school developed a program that was spot-on. But the extra six weeks enriched our clinical practice, and gave us a peek into the obstacles of working as a professional nurse. Every grueling moment that we experienced taught us what we needed to provide safe quality care. The additional perk was that seven of nine students passed the nursing licensure exam with the highest scores in the history of the school.
Committing one’s life to serve Christ also involves painstaking changes, and suffering. Even so, we require a complete character transformation to become holy and acceptable to reach God’s standards. As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous–not even one. For everyone has sinned, we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:10, 23.
Whether you are a New Believer or an Old Soldier, please know that we will suffer bitter, fiery trials and tribulations in the furnace of affliction. As our fingerprints differ, so will our struggles against sin. The weaknesses that reveal our character defects require a complete spiritual make-over. So when we are “going through it,” please know that it is not our imagination. The struggle to change is real, but we must endure. God has the greatest reward that the faithful will ever receive. Do not become discouraged! Rely on God. God loves us, and He is always faithful. God has mighty good plans for His children if we just hold on.
Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4
Yes, spiritual growth always involves growing pains, but our Heavenly Father has a plan and a purpose for each of us. Jesus Christ, our Intercessor, is training us to develop characters in His divine likeness. It is fallen humanity that Jesus sacrificed His life for by hanging on Calvary’s cross. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:2. Hold on, and never forget we are the redeemed that Jesus is coming back for and to take us to our heavenly home.
Jesus’ promises:
Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid. John 14:27
Let Christ perform a mighty and wonderful work in your life. Release your will and your way to endure the process of restoration, and Jesus will provide an amazing transformation of your character. The reward of Eternal life in the New Heaven and the New Earth requires that we have pure hearts and perfect, righteous characters. He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! Revelation 22:20

We live in an atmosphere where profane words are spoken freely from the rivers of negative thoughts. The boundaries of tact and discretion have been cast aside for a new normal of transparency, saying what is on our minds. After all, isn’t it dishonest to pretend that everything is alright when it isn’t? If we turn the other cheek and disregard others’ wrongful actions, they will see us as weak, and then people will really take advantage of us. So, we stay prepared for the battle, always ready to defend ourselves and engage in the war of verbal sparring.
Some triggers initiate thoughts of retaliation: someone that you usually know or love speaks hurtful or accusatory words, receiving mistreatment, or facing the sour fruit of disappointment. These are just a few of the situations that can propel us into a whirlwind of negativity.
When we face disappointment, it doesn’t feel right. Especially when we have worked hard and given our best, and someone else receives what we rightfully deserve. We begin to think that life is unfair, which produces fertile ground for the seeds of anger, bitterness, and resentment to multiply.
Negative thinking always leads to destruction. We place ourselves in a lose-lose situation by trading peace, happiness, and inner joy for discontent, bitterness, and pessimism. The domino effect of negative thinking leads to an unproductive life. Our social circle changes, the friends that we once had now avoid us. We begin to seek the company of those who possess the same mindset to reinforce and validate our unhealthy thoughts. And unfortunately, our lives become like an empty glass that has nothing inside.
Throughout Jesus’ life, He faced hatred, and countless, harsh accusations. But let’s take a look at Jesus’ approach to His accusers:
Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?” 61 But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Mark 14:60-62
Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “You have said it.” 3 Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes, 4 and Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?” 5 But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise. Mark 15:2-4
Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life. 24 Put away deception from your mouth; keep your lips from perverse speech.… Proverbs 4:23-24. To guard our hearts with all diligence is to work hard to control the thoughts that can enter our minds. Self-control is one of the Fruit of the Spirit. It is a character trait that requires much effort every day.
As Believers of the Most-High God, we face daily temptations. Satan will always allow situations to arise where people, places, and things will provoke ungodly thoughts that quickly become unholy spoken words. Pray! Do not React! Just like Jesus, we can remain silent. By immediately praying, we can overcome the desire to speak our thoughts of retaliation. Still, we cannot fool ourselves into thinking that we have self-control just because we did not say our wrongful thoughts. It is a prayer of confession and repentance that is required for even considering the unspoken sinful thoughts.
In Philippians chapter 4, the Apostle Paul made it his priority to address Euodia and Syntyche’s dispute. He asked the two women in the church to settle their differences because they were Believers. Because of humanity’s natural tendencies, Paul did not leave it up to them to work things out between themselves. He asked a fellow believer to intervene because both of these members were active in witnessing to others.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5. Is it possible to take every thought captive? If we desire to change, God will give us the strength to rid ourselves of sinful thoughts. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
God has promised that He would never place more on us than we can bear. No temptation has overtaken you, except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13
During this pandemic, God has removed many distractions from our lives. We must prepare ourselves for Eternal life by comparing our character and lifestyle to the Word of God. Our thoughts, words, actions, behaviors, and habits are the total sum of our character. No situation can arise that will compel us to speak or act outside of our real character. The Bible is the spiritual mirror that we must look into daily.
Jesus is coming soon to give the faithful our reward of immortality and life in a perfect world. Now is our time of probation to identify and eliminate all ungodly traits. Remember, there will be no apologies or forgiveness in the New Heaven and the New Earth. Commit today to trust in God. With God, we can be victorious overcomers. Hallelujah! For, “In just a little while, He who is coming will come and will not delay.” Hebrews 10:37
8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8

Every year from April to September, my indoor plants live outdoors on the porch. This year, I noticed a spurt of growth that expanded their sizes to the width or height of 2-3 feet depending on the plant type. For the first time in their growth cycle, I did not feed my plants, so I could not attribute their growth to artificial plant food. Although we have a large pecan tree whose branches extend toward the house, the leavesof every plant stood tall as if they were reaching up to grasp every ray of sunlight that shined through.
What was the basis behind this phenomenal growth?
Although there is a natural growth cycle for every plant, the vegetative and flowering stages of growth are directly influenced by light. Artificial lights allow for year-round growth and quick production, but the intensity and nutrients that natural sunlight offers can never truly be duplicated. Without light, we would not have green plant life, vegetable gardens would not produce, and flowers would not bloom. Light gives food and energy to plants through photosynthesis and makes everything flourish. Because of the sun’s intensity in the area of Texas where we reside, the average morning temperatures during our season of fun-in-the-sun only bottom out at 72 degrees. As I thought about their rich growth, there is one thing that I did differently for my plants, and that was to mist their leaves once or twice a day. I just read an article on the benefits of the morning dew, and just maybe that made the difference in the plants reaching their fullest potential this year.
When I look at those beautiful, flourishing plants, I think about our spiritual growth. Unlike the plants, which are limited to natural growth cycles, we can experience unlimited spiritual growth and development every day throughout our lifetime. We have a Heavenly Intercessor, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is the Light. Jesus validates that He is the Light that leads to life and that life is Eternal.
How do we receive our light, Jesus Christ?
First, by faith, we must believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Discard all prior beliefs based on theories, creeds, or doctrines that teach Jesus was just a prophet or a righteous man who lived and did good deeds.
The Word of God documents that God announced and confirmed the identity of Jesus Christ:
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 3:16-17
Jesus also verified who He is:
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12
Many refuse to acknowledge that sinful humanity requires a Heavenly Intercessor who is Jesus Christ. Even so, Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6. Our salvation is through Jesus, and there is no detour around Jesus, who is our only way to God. We should acknowledge the deity of the Son of God by ending our prayers, “in Jesus’ Name, we pray. Amen.”
Jesus’ life on Earth shows us that we must rely on Divine power to overcome sin and to have limitless spiritual growth. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10. Satan is the thief whose primary purpose is to make us miss out on the joy of serving God, and he most certainly does not want us to have eternal life.
Make the decision to believe the most precious Words spoken by Jesus. Take the leap of faith and invite Jesus into your life by confessing and repenting of your sins. Then begin to pray and study the Bible to establish a personal relationship with Christ. Through faith and heartfelt prayer, we have unlimited access, any time of the day or night to our Spiritual Team: God, the Father, Jesus Christ, His Son, and the Holy Spirit, who are the Trinity Godhead. If there is anything that you are unsure of when studying, know this: If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5
Just as plants that wilt away without light, we must seek God daily. Go ahead, reach upward to receive the life-giving Light, and the refreshment of the Morning Dew from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Imagine that you received an invitation to attend an event, which stated, “Formal attire required.” If you possessed prior knowledge of the protocols for a formal attire or attended many formal events, it would be relatively easy for you to decide the outfit that you would wear, or your shopping trip would be focused on stores that also sell formal attire. If not, research would be necessary for you to gain knowledge of the requirements for an acceptable outfit. Certainly, you would put forth your greatest effort to adhere to the requisites of the event.
Obedience is a concept that causes an ongoing dilemma for many individuals. Our standard for obedience most often arises from our childhood understanding of our parents/caregiver’s definition of obedience. Unfortunately, if childhood disobedience was not addressed with disciplinary measures or ignored then is it highly probable that you are still facing the consequences of wayward behaviors as an adult. Still, you have the opportunity to learn the cause and effect of obedience as a fruit of love. So, I invite you to keep reading.
For parents who had a firm grasp of obedience they easily recognized when their children were disobedient. You may laugh, as you reflect on the times that you disobeyed, and think that your parents were unaware. Contrary to your belief, they were fully aware of your disobedience. It’s just that they did not address it at that particular time. When parents have a standard of excellence for obedience, their children’s acts of disobedience stand out like a red flag.
Remember when you asked if you could go to your friend’s home or some other event, or you desired a video game, or you needed money to go shopping with your friends and they gave an immediate answer of “No?” It was because of the prior acts of disobedience that you thought that you got away with. Whether or not you received an explanation of “why” they denied your request would depend upon their parenting style. If they desired to reveal their awareness of your hidden disobedience, then the answer may have been, “You cannot go, because last week you did not complete your assigned tasks.” As your balloon of happiness bursts, you try to figure out how they could have possibly known. After all, you did clean your room, but you threw everything under the bed or in the closet, or the bag of household garbage was placed in the outside bin after the day of collection.
Merriam-Webster defines Obedience as submissive to the restraint or command of authority: willing to obey.
Obedience requires the willingness to submit to all boundaries and commands of authority. Adhering to boundaries extends beyond our personal lives. Most organizations, especially the military and healthcare always have stringent rules and regulations. Breach of their protocols usually results in severe consequences that may include imprisonment and the licensure loss to practice. Although it may sound harsh, before enrolling or pursuing that particular career, the individual always possesses prior knowledge that complete submission of their will is required.
Another area of great compromise is the obedience to traffic laws. An abundant source of revenue for counties and states are from the fines that are collected for traffic violations. And what about the excessive monies that individuals pay for an attorney to work out a plea agreement and pay the courts to maintain their driving privileges when their licenses should have been suspended or revoked?
Even so, there is one aspect of our lives that money or plea agreements are ineffective in changing the consequences, and that is our spiritual walk with God. We will never be able to hide our thoughts or acts of disobedience from God. One of God’s characteristics is Omniscience, All-Knowing. Yes, the Path of Salvation is narrow, and does not allow for deviation. But like the military enrollees and healthcare professionals, we have prior knowledge of the consequences of disobedience to God.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Romans 6:23
With God, there are no misunderstandings, surprises, changes, or gray areas of compromise. The solution to living a faithful life is the complete submission of our will to the will of God. Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.” Matthew 22:37-38
Personally, I love the straightforward manner of God. God’s instructions are always no compromise. Unlike worldly standards that have loopholes, God’s truth provides consistency and stability in our lives. When we commit to serving God, He not only gives us the requirements for obedience, He says that loving Him with all of our heart, soul, and mind is mandatory.
“If you love me, obey my commandments.” John 14:15
Our Heavenly Father knew that we would always waver between obedience and disobedience, and err on the side of disobedience because our natural desires are emnity against Him. Because He loves the human beings that He created in His image, God accepted the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, to die for the redemption of our sins. From Jesus’ death and resurrection, we have the opportunity to confess and repent of our sins. But we must remember that God’s forgiveness is a gift that we should never take for granted.
Although, alone we are no match for Satan’s power, we can praise God that Satan can never compel us to do evil. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:13
Reflecting on God’s never-ending supply of love, grace, and mercies should produce heartfelt gratitude and the willingness to serve God by being obedient to His will. Our walk with God is not passive. Our spiritual journey requires constant action on our part. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13. It takes faith in God to avoid the pitfalls of sin. Our love for God is the foundation of our faith in God. Much love produces much faith, which produces the fruit of obedience.
REFLECTION: Obedience–the service and allegiance of love–is the true sign of discipleship. Thus the Scripture says, “This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.”…Instead of releasing man from obedience, it is faith, and faith only, that makes us partakers of the grace of Christ, which enables us to render obedience. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was my first working experience after graduating as a Registered Nurse. I was one of two nurses chosen in the hospital’s new graduate program to work in a highly specialized unit. There were stringent requirements: I was assigned an experienced Nurse Preceptor whose credentials and working experience was reviewed and approved by the New York State Education Department’s Office of the Professions. The hospital, the Nurse Manager of NICU, and the Nurse Preceptor, entered into a contractual agreement with the State of New York. I was also required to commit to a contract with the hospital to train under a preceptor for six months.
Kelly, a young, energetic nurse agreed to be my preceptor. She was a phenomenal person with a big heart filled with love for everyone. We had a get-to-know-you lunch, and I learned that Kelly was the only nurse in the unit that was unmarried and without children. That is until she adopted two babies from NICU that were born to mothers with drug addictions. At the beginning of their earthly journey, the babies suffered the consequences of illicit drugs, severe withdrawal symptoms, and congenital disabilities. By the time, I met Kelly, her children were ages 7 and 8 who experienced normal growth but developed with severe cognitive and physical challenges. Even so, Kelly, a God-fearing woman, was truly a testimony of what it is to sacrifice for others and view life through spiritual eyes. She provided a new and better life for two babies that would have been institutionalized due to no fault of their own.
During the pandemic, I have listened to several sermons on using this time as the perfect opportunity to have a deeper relationship with God. The most recent sermon suggested that we change our perspective and view the quarantine as a time of spiritual incubation. God is preparing us for a new and better life by giving us the time to change. The conditions of lockdown and social distancing are optimal for us to increase our worship with God by listening to inspirational music, praying and studying the Bible, at least 1-2 hours per day.
Like the babies in the Neonatal ICU who are placed in incubators that provide the best possible environment to support healing, growth, and development, God, our Heavenly Father also gives us the resources to enjoy a thriving relationship with Him. God’s love, grace, mercies, and blessings provide the best possible environment for us to achieve spiritual healing, growth and development. He even promises us protection from the evil forces in this world.
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Psalm 91:1, 4
As infants who are entirely dependent on their caregivers, so should we be wholly reliant on God. Still, we are required to do our part through obedience, faith, and complete trust in God. Diligent study of the Bible and communicating with God through heartfelt prayers allows us to experience daily spiritual renewal. One aspect of the Plan of Salvation that many do not understand is that we must possess the Character of Christ to have Eternal life. Comparing our characters to Galatians 5:22-23 provides us with the insight on acceptable and unacceptable traits and behaviors. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23
Make the plan to prepare for the new and better life that Jesus is coming back to give to us. If you have not used the previous 10 months wisely, then begin today. Develop a schedule to spend quality time with God every day for the remaining two months in 2020. Focus on building a strong relationship with God by discarding ungodly character traits. Ask God to reveal the behaviors and habits that prevent you from living righteously. Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness, no one will see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14
The new and better life will exclude sin, sickness, death, and evil. “Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one according to what he has done.” Revelation 22:12. Our reward is eternal life in the perfect New Heaven and New Earth.
Even though Jesus was a perfect role-model, He also faced opposition with His disciples. Peter always had a hidden agenda; in fact his plans were usually contrary to Jesus’ plans. Throughout His ministry, Jesus reminded the disciples of His divine purpose. Even so, Peter had the desire for Jesus to establish an earthly kingdom. When Jesus told the disciples of His approaching death, guess which disciple refused to accept the truth?
As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. Mark 8:32. I must admit when I first read this verse, I said, “What?” How could Peter be so bold as to approach the Son of God and rebuke (KJV) Jesus? When Peter heard Jesus’ plans, it caused conflict with his secret desires for Jesus to become King and for himself to have a lofty position. Peter’s objective was to stop being a disciple living in poverty, whose only purpose was to spread the gospel and serve others. Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” Mark 8:33 NLT
The truth is that many who say, “Jesus is Lord” also have hidden agendas. We may never be as bold as Peter was and speak words of rebuke against God’s plans, but isn’t that what we are doing when we pursue our desires? Please know that we are living in the last days of earth’s history. Now is not the time to be sad, disappointed, or discouraged. According to the signs of these times, God has changed our plans. We are living in the last days. No, we may never purchase the new car, or house, change jobs or complete our college education. We may have unfulfilled goals, or even have sustained significant loss during the pandemic. But remember, when we place our lives in God’s hands, we always come through victoriously. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34
Learn to rebuke Satan and get rid of all sorrowful thoughts. Our part in the Plan of Salvation is to faithfully serve God. Faith facilitates spiritual transformation, and unleashes His power. When we understand the things that God is preparing for us in the New Heaven and the New Earth, we will see life as the Apostle Paul: But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9
As for Peter, he had many ups and downs. But, when he made the decision to serve God with all of his heart, soul, and mind, his spiritual growth flourished. He became a servant of God who no longer followed his own agenda, and became a steadfast preacher, and a bold leader. He is the writer of the books of 1 and 2 Peter in the New Testament.
Jesus is coming soon! I don’t know about you, but that’s a big reason to rejoice. Have a blessed and Happy Sabbath!

This is God’s loving challenge to you and me each day. He wants us to think of the deepest, highest, and worthiest desires and longings of our hearts. He wants us to think of those things that perhaps were desires for ourselves or someone dear to us, yet have gone unfulfilled for so long that we now see them as simply lost desires. And God urges us to think of even the one thing that we once saw as possible but have given up all hope of seeing fulfilled in this life.
The only thing “too hard for the LORD” is our deliberate and continual disbelief in His love and power, and ultimate rejection of His plans for us. Nothing is impossible for Jehovah to do for those who trust Him. From Messages for the Morning Watch

After an exhausting day at work, it was my second week of On-Call rotation for an Home Health agency that provided patient care 24/7. I can remember receiving an after-hours phone call from one of our patients that she needed a nurse. After the patient, who I will refer to as Mrs. M, relayed the issue, I realized that the first level On-Call nurse would have to make an in-home visit to the patient. As I explained that a nurse would be there in 30 minutes, the patient asked, “You aren’t sending the nurse who comes to my house three times a week, are you?” Immediately, I realized that Mrs. M’s question indicated that a severe issue existed with her assigned Home Health Aide. I reassured the patient by giving her the name of the nurse who would make the evening visit.
Since this was the first time that I had spoken to Mrs. M., I realized for her to trust me that she had to feel comfortable speaking to me. We begin to talk about her hobbies. She expressed her love of crocheting. Since I was also an avid member of the yarn nation, crocheting, and knitting from a young age, we spoke about our craft’s endless possibilities. Suddenly, Mrs. M. changed the subject and asked, “Sonya, what did you say your title was?” to which I replied, “I am the Nursing Director.”
I prepared myself with pen/paper to document the following story: The Home Health Aide (HHA), who provided Mrs. M’s personal care 3 x week, told the patient that she was in a financial bind and needed money. The HHA asked the patient for money, and the patient gave $200 in cash to alleviate her aide’s predicament. The plot thickens. The patient reported that the HHA continued to ask her for money, in amounts from $50-$100 every week. The final complaint from Mrs. M. was that the Home Health Aide would become angry if she failed to give her additional money and would handle her roughly during her personal care.
For the benefit of those who do not know what happened next, this physical abuse and exploitation incident was a reportable offense to the State Agency that prevents Elder Abuse. Since HHAs are not licensed in the state where this occurred, the Home Health Agency was liable to repay the $200 to the patient. Mrs. M was of sound mind and refused to take further legal action. At the meeting between the HHA, the Executive Director, and myself, the HHA reported that Mrs. M. offered her the money, so she accepted it. But the Home Health Aide adamantly denied all of the patient’s other allegations. Yes, the organization’s policy mandated immediate termination; however, please remember that losing a job does not change one’s character.
The human heart is the most deceitful of all things and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? Jeremiah 17:9
Although most of us would never demand money from an older person, what other things have we done in the past or present that we are so ashamed of that we would never want another person to know? Do we have the confidence to say, “I would never do ___________under any circumstances?” It takes the right situation to reveal a person’s true character. Facing adversity can leave us stressed-out and overwhelmed. It is then that Satan attempts to take advantage of our weakened faith and presents gift-wrapped, “Get rich quick schemes.”
The question, Who Am I? is an up-close and personal self-evaluation of your character, and your love and commitment to God. Wayward thoughts and sinful solutions easily enter our minds when we do not see the answer. Even so, desperate times do not call for desperate measures when we serve God. Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out. Proverbs 10:9. Living for God means having a mindset of “No Compromise, No Matter What!”
Since humanity shares the same characteristic of having a wicked heart, we must rely on God to solve all of our challenges, and to live by godly standards. Make a covenant vow to God to faithfully trust in Him despite the presenting circumstances. Pray a simple prayer, God, you know my situation, and I desperately need your help. Amen

Practical Messages for Impractical Times by Sonya Johnson Ruiz
There are times when something goes awry, and my electronics seem to have a mind of their own. My initial reaction used to be frustration, now I simply reboot, and their normal functioning abilities are restored, and all is well. The past week, I endured some stressful times that left me mentally and emotionally exhausted. My prayers were answered when God allowed me to read two Devotional messages (one by Sister Zoe) on the necessity of solitude and silence. We should make a daily habit of placing everything around us on pause, to practice silence, and to spend solitary moments in communion with God.
Do you remember your stage of growth and development, known as the “teenage stage,” when you battled a spirit of rebellion? Many parents went through the roller coaster ride of their children crossing the bridge from dependent to independent and the closeness that they once had almost ceased to exist. Although, a teenager does not understand the “why?” of their inner turmoil, the mind and body are being prepared for the hardships of adulthood. The one of the few memories that I do recall from that stage is the overwhelming desire to just be left alone, away from the rest of the family.
The scripture Be Still and know that I am God…Psalm 46:10 is to be taken literally—God, our Creator, desires that we place our busyness on pause. I can recall escaping from the commotion of a hectic job by taking lunch hour in my car. From 12 pm-1 pm, while eating a nutritional lunch, I enjoyed a mid-day worship experience with God, which left me refreshed. Although I noticed a vast improvement in my mental acuity and physical energy when I chose the peace of silence and solitude, I was inconsistent. On the days I worked through lunch, went out with my coworkers, and chatted nonstop, I was sluggish by 2 pm, which caused the unhealthy habit of drinking coffee. Believe me, it takes a conscious effort to form the habit of taking pause breaks for silence and solitude, but the benefits were awesome!
This morning, God reminded me of the necessity to separate myself and spend quiet time alone with Him. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:6. With all of the chaos surrounding us, decide to get away and have spiritual escapes as often as you can. Even with working a full-time job, we can take 1-2 minutes to perform a set of 3-5 deep breathing exercises and pray. Yes, God is aware of our daily responsibilities, and He knows the stressors that we face every day. His answer to preventing fatigue, burnout, and premature aging: Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually! 1 Chronicles 16:11. God honors our commitment when we place our busyness on hold to spend time with Him.
The Power of Silence–The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent. Exodus 14:14
We live in societies that encourage transparency, big reveals, ranting, sounding off, verbal sparring, and telling it like it is. But this is in direct opposition to the Word of God. In Ecclesiastes 3, God tells us that there is a time for everything; A time to be quiet and a time to speak. Ecclesiastes 3:7 (last part). We do not have to tell all, engage in lively debates, or be involved in conflict. I will be the first to admit that maintaining silence is a tough battle. Even so, obedience to God is not an option. If we say that we love God, then we will: Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves. James 1:22
With prayer and submission of our will to God, we can understand David’s prayer; Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10. Not only will we grow spiritually by gaining a deeper relationship with God, but we are also refreshed mentally and physically. Life-changing strategy: Go ahead, incorporate solitude and silence in your life by placing yourself on pause, and you will come to rely on and enjoy the peace that passes all understanding.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
“Is that so? retorted Pharaoh. “And who is the Lord? Why should I listen to him and let Israel go?”…”I don’t know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go.” Exodus 5:2
As I read this verse, I focused on Pharaoh’s answer of “I don’t know the Lord.” Then I began to do some real soul-searching and asked myself, “Sonya, do you really know the Lord?” Because if you really knew God, then your faith would be rock-solid strong, and you would trust God to take you through the process of deliverance. In fact, Sonya, your eyes would never be fixated on your circumstances because you realize that God promises to always take care of you.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
Yes, God’s perfect plans always bring victory to our lives. We say that we believe and know who God is, but we do not fully trust in Him with all of our heart. During our stormy struggles, many of us silently wonder, “God, did you forget about me?” Absolutely not! Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD. Psalm 27:14.
As most of the earth prepares for its wintry rest and the days become shorter, we can also use this time to our advantage. Buy a couple of starter plants or seed packets and use grow lights to start an inside garden. Watch the progress of the little seeds or plants. By the spring of the following year, they will be mature plants because of your loving care. Our faith and trust in God have the same flourishing capabilities. Like our starter plants, prayer, and study of the Bible are the water and sunshine we need for spiritual growth.
Never forget, God will always take care of us. The Bible is full of life stories that reflect His love and promises to take impossible situations and turn them into victory. If we only understood the value of prayer, we have the privilege of talking to God at any time of the day or night. Even in our deepest sorrows, we can pray, “God, I need your help.” Commit to building a faith-based relationship with God, and day-by-day, the Invisible God will become visible in your life like you never imagined. There is no end to Spiritual growth!

Historically, since sin entered the earth, prejudice and biases based on hate have always existed between human beings. From Cain to modern society hatred has produced many sour fruits of exclusion based on physical, social, religious, and economic statuses. Satan continues to escalate the presence of evil by turning humanity against each other because we fail to acknowledge that everyone was created in the image of God, and therefore, we are equal in His sight.
Throughout, the Bible we learn of the animosity of nation against nation, along with the separation between persons of Jewish descent and Gentiles, persons who were not Jewish.
Gentiles mean nations, according to Smith’s Bible Dictionary. The term Gentile does not really describe who someone is but rather who they are, not – a Jew. A Gentile is one belonging to any nation or people group other than the Jewish people group. http://www.christianity.com
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. John 4:7-9
Simon Peter’s Vision: Acts 10
Were you aware that Simon Peter mentioned in Acts is the same person that was Jesus’ disciple? Peter witnessed first-hand that Jesus did not abide or tolerate the Jewish laws of separation based on nationality or ethnicity. But out of loyalty to the Jewish tradition of segregation, Peter actively practiced the very biases and prejudices that Christ had shown His disciples that God does not condone. Regardless of customs and traditions, Jesus’ ministry was extended to everyone, and His life clearly portrays that God is no respecter of persons.
But like Peter who disregarded the Savior’s teachings, we readily embrace false concepts that are not in sync with the Word of God. How does one embrace hatred for other individuals? We begin to dislike people based on family values, cultural traditions, negative interaction with one person of a particular race or religion, economic wealth or poverty, or just because it is a freedom of choice. Even so, in His mercy, God always provides teaching moments that give us the opportunity to change.
Peter’s Vision
9 The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. 10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 11 and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 13 And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” Acts 10:9-14
Many individuals use Peter’s dream to justify eating unclean animals, swine, crustaceans, and even rodents that God created to keep the earth and waters clean. So now, I will deviate to explain further the health laws given in Leviticus. In Genesis chapter 1, God tells us that He created humanity to eat a plant-based diet. And yes, because humanity is never content with what God has given to us, God gave in to the complainers and permitted the Israelites to eat clean meats and fish.
Still, it is not enough. We disregard God-given health laws, and eat whatever makes us happy. Disobedience to God has resulted in the lifespan of humanity decreasing from Adam dying naturally of old age at 930 compared to our struggle to reach the average age of 78 in the United States, because many are so sickly due to diseases caused from malnutrition (poor eating habits as opposed to lack of food).
Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit. 3 John 1:2. This is the true definition of prosperity, great health!
Have you thought about reaching peak performance and an optimal level of health? Return to the original diet of eating a plant-based diet. Do an online search to observe how cows eat? They were created to eat a plant-based diet also, and that is why they chew, chew, chew, to receive the highest level of nutrients. Contrary to popular belief, we do not become malnourished from eating a plant-based diet–look how big cows become, but their size is not due to adipose, fat tissue storage.
Shopping for fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and grains with their vast array of colors and shapes demonstrates God’s love of beauty and His desire for us to reach the optimal level of health that He created us to have. As a nurse, I have cared for individuals who were gravely ill, and with a change in diet, they were able to lose weight and receive healing from many of their diseases. Oh, yes, I have always used the opportunity to witness by encouraging my patients to eat a healthier diet.
Healthy eating is a lifestyle, not a quick-fix method of dieting. You will reap positive benefits from pampering your mind and body. I am a living witness of the benefits of serving God and eating a plant-based diet. At 62 years of age, even with a physical disability of not having cartilage in my knees, I live a pain-free life. I am wrinkle-free, joyful, and at peak performance intellectually and physically. But the most remarkable change is that I possess extra energy, which has given me the desire to grow closer to God. By diligently studying the Bible and praying heartfelt prayers as part of my healthy living regimen, my relationship with God is growing stronger. Yes, God does know what is best for us!
Please embrace the study of the Old Testament, which is full of real-life accounts of people who failed and succeeded. Thankfully, God tells us that His law, the Ten Commandments or the Health-laws will exist until we live in the New Heaven and New Earth (Revelation chapters 21-22) where we will not need laws to prevent sin. For truly I tell you until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Matthew 5:18
Peter’s Vision and its’ Interpretation
15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” 16 This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again. Acts 10:15-16
Knowing that God’s dietary laws would never change, Peter was perplexed–completely baffled, and very puzzled. But this is the part that makes me so excited about serving God. He always reveals the truth to us. We are never left without an explanation that we can fully understand. God meets us exactly where we are in life, and then His miraculous power works to transform us into His standards of spiritual perfection.
Cornelius, a God-fearing Gentile obeyed the angel’s command to call for Simon Peter (Acts 10:1-8) to come to his home. When Peter traveled to Caesarea to see Cornelius, the Holy Spirit revealed the true meaning of the dream:
Peter told them, “You know it is against our laws for a Jewish man to enter a Gentile home like this or to associate with you. But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean. Acts 10:28
Traditions or cultural guidelines that indicate and support segregation or distinguishing oneself as better than others are ungodly and unholy practices. Throughout the 33 years of Jesus’ interaction with others, He embraced the wealthy, poor, Jew, and Gentile. Read Joshua 2, which tells how God used Rahab the Harlot to fulfill His purpose.
God’s laws and commandments are based on love.
36 “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?” 37, Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”…Matthew 22:36-40
God has specifically cautioned us against breaking the second commandment involving love as the foundation in our relationships with others, Matthew 22:39. What does God consider as breaking His law on loving others? When we refuse to love and embrace all of humanity, first and foremost, we sin against God, the Creator. Hating individuals based on customs, traditions and differences, or possessing the mindset of “this is just the way it is, reveals that we support evil-doing.
The word, “hate” carries strength, and most will not admit that biases and prejudices are fruits from hatred. Have you ever admitted that the dislike you feel for others is hatred? The imaginary gray area was created by Satan to justify sin. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.Revelation 3:15-16. Dislike is not a characteristic of the love of God. The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. Proverbs 8:13.
God is love! And His unconditional love is to all and for all. When we are filled with pride and hatred or embrace traditional customs and prejudices, we are saying, “I do not believe in God nor do I wish to follow His commands.” God does not classify us with human standards such as lower, middle, or upper class. Neither does He have tolerance for biases based on social or economic status, caste systems that still maintain the undertone of exclusion because one is born into a certain level, prejudice, and discrimination of individuals based on their physical appearance.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:26-27. God is the most excellent Master Designer that we will ever know. From the flowers to the fruits and vegetables to His most outstanding creation, human beings, we are His masterpiece, and His world is still, Simply Amazing!
Throughout 40 plus years of nursing, I have experienced prejudice and racism from patients, co-workers, and physicians. Even unto a hospice patient saying, “Get away from me, don’t touch me!” before he took his last breath. Yes, Satan attempted to make me a victim and feel less than who God says I am. Even so, I have always known that I am a child of the Most-High God. If you are experiencing discrimination or any of the “isms,” first, affirm your status by telling yourself, “they can say what they want or mistreat me, but I know who created me and I know that I am a child of God.” An appropriate response of “God bless you” to others that Satan uses to belittle you will soon cause them to avoid you. Believe me, God’s name is the last thing that individuals who possess hatred desire to hear.
I want to leave you with Jesus’ encouraging words, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33. Believe and Receive His promises!
Now is the time to come to Jesus through prayer and ask for forgiveness if we have mistreated others based on religious, physical, gender, social, and economic statuses. Maybe you are or have been the victim of bias and prejudice, ask God to heal your wounded heart, and reaffirm who you belong to, the Most-High God. Our Heavenly Father loves us with a never-ending love!
Love God, Love Others, Love Yourself
God, we ask forgiveness for using our words or actions as swords to wound others. We failed to remember that you created all of humanity in your image and that your array of colors are perfect. We pray for the healing of all wounded hearts who continue to suffer from the “isms” of this world. God, please give us the strength to endure until your Son, Jesus Christ, comes for us. We look forward to living in the New Heaven and the New Earth, where we never have to experience any emotional pain or sorrows from this life. Thank you for creating the Sabbath, a Holy day that we can receive spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical rest from this world’s cares. We love you, God, and we ask this prayer in the Worthy Name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen!
