Are you Color-blind?

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us… Genesis 1:26

Color blindness is the inability to see some colors in the usual way. It is a hereditary condition where the eyes do not interpret the colors of objects correctly. Because my father suffered from this condition, my mother assisted him by picking out his ties to match his suits which he wore daily to his job as a salesperson.

Many years ago, I discovered that I have an extraordinary gift. Although my eyes interpret the various colors that exist in the environment, when I look at people, I am completely color blind, I can only see the Hue of Humanity.

But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the LORD God formed man from the dust (mud) of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being. Genesis 2:6-7

Certainly, God loves beauty, He is the ultimate Designer. All we have to do is look at our wonderful world and we can see that His blueprint included a vast array of colors and designs represented by all living creatures and our planet Earth.

For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. Psalm 138:14

Reflect on the amazing love that God has for us, and thank him for not giving us a world that was monotone and mundane. Free your mind and Reject the Shades of Gray mindset which represents all biases, prejudices, and “isms.”

Bible Reading: Genesis 1-2

God, thank you for making us in your image. Please help us to eliminate our negative outlook on others based on their external appearance. Thank you for designing a perfect world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Re-evaluate your Status

Our world is in a crisis! Human trafficking, economic recession, a pandemic, and now a repeat of the historical rioting and looting involving racism and murder. On social media, many individuals are expressing anger and disappointment because they have reached their level of tolerance regarding “things that can go wrong.”

When we look at our current status, things are not looking too good. Ask someone how they are doing, and chances are they will tell you they are worried or angry or feeling as if the world is coming to an end. And yes, we may feel if one more thing happens, we will lose our minds.

Most of us have been through some tough times, and we made the necessary changes for a positive outcome. Humanity has several advantages over other species. We do not live based on instinct, nor do we function by possessing a “survival of the strongest” mindset. We are resilient! When we take a moment to sit down, inhale and exhale, and evaluate our situation, we have viable options.

First, identify all of your financial challenges and explore realistic options to stabilize your current situation. Ask for help! Many companies are willing to give a one-month extension for mortgages and vehicle notes. Closing out credit card accounts will prevent late fees and interest payments. Local churches are usually able to assist with a one-time payment of utilities, and food banks are readily available. Also, as a last resort, filing bankruptcy is an option if your debt is above and beyond what you can manage.

Changing your mindset to take complete control of your life is vital.

Staying at your optimal level of health is also a priority. We are still in the middle of a pandemic, practicing infection control measures such as social distancing reduces the risk of contracting the Coronavirus. Use disposable gloves when touching common areas outside of your home environment. To mask or not to mask is a personal choice.

Do you need peace of mind? Including God in your life is a definite perk, you will regain your mental and physical strength by giving Him all of your burdens and difficulties. Study the book of Psalms. Pray and release. Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

Lastly, incorporate some free and fun activities into your lifestyle. Get outside at least once a day. Eat healthy foods and exercise every day. We should be happy, today’s a new day, and we are alive.

Bible Reading: Psalm 23

God, our world continues in confusion and chaos. We ask you to give us a plan to resolve our challenges and peace of mind. We ask this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Refuse to Riot, Chapter 4

The 1967 Newark riots were one of 159 race riots that swept cities in the United States during the “Long Hot Summer of 1967”. This riot occurred in Newark, New Jersey, between July 12 and July 17, 1967. Over the four days of rioting, looting, and property destruction, 26 people died, and hundreds were injured. Wikipedia

When the Newark riots occurred, I was eight years old, living in Newark, NJ. The majority of the rioting and looting occurred in downtown Newark with minimal damage to the uptown area where we lived. Even so, the images seared in my memory are larger than life, green army tanks that rolled up and down our streets to maintain safety and enforce the daily curfew of 5 pm, and the devastating effects of torched buildings.

On the day, my father decided to take our family to downtown Newark to look at the charred ashes that represented once-thriving businesses. The Iron gates that represented safety and used to prevent entry through the windows and doors were not impenetrable. With the broken locks intentionally left on the ground, and the gates torn from their tracks, one could easily peer inside the empty stores, only the remnants of shelves and shattered glass remained from the torched buildings. Amidst all of the destruction, one business stood alone untouched, and that was William S. Rich & Son located in the heart of downtown Newark.

Mr. Rich was a philanthropist of Jewish descent, a social activist, and a fair man with an unusually kind heart. The pawnshop that he started to help those in need does not reflect the modern pawnshops of today. Wm S. Rich & Son was the cornerstone of the community and thrived because of short-term loans given to struggling individuals who needed to feed their families or pay their rent. Mr. Rich’s philosophy was that most people had run out of options forcing them to pawn their most valuable items, and he was fully aware that human beings work hard to regain the things we value.

Yes, he was much more than a successful entrepreneur, Mr. Rich cared for and gave back to the individuals that depended on him. And our family can attest to the kindness of this man who impacted the lives of many. After 35 years, our father retired from Wm S. Rich & Son, and we were also the benefactors of his generosity.

As I think about the reasons that my father took our family to view the destruction, I realize that my Dad wanted us to see the atrocious results from the anger and rage that already lives inside each of us. My father refused to accept the looting and burning down of businesses as a method of retaliation. I can still recall his words, “It was wrong to burn down these businesses. Doing wrong can never produce what is right.” It is hard to believe, 53 years later, that across our nation, many are involved in the same self-destructive behaviors using social injustice as leverage to substantiate their wrongdoing.

To the families of those who have lost loved ones due to brutality, and drive-by shootings, human trafficking, and other unconscionable acts of murder, we grieve from the depths of our souls. We are sorry for your loss, and we pray for God to comfort you.

And we pray for the innocent victims living in the cities that are torn apart by racism and the destruction of looting and rioting, who lost their only source of income and can no longer support their neighborhood businesses because they no longer exist. Never underestimate your child’s negative experiences because I can relate to the overwhelming sadness and despair that they feel. The ravages of war leave behind the brutal images and the violence incite fear and insecurities that one will never know unless they have experienced the consequences of the war of humans against humans.

Our emotional responses always lead to unacceptable solutions!

My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires. James 1:20

How well do you rate in the areas of self-control and discipline? Although the environment in which we grew up shaped who we are because we adopted our parent’s or caregiver’s morals and values, we need to evaluate and discard what is not conducive to our spiritual growth.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

To evaluate oneself requires eating a massive slice of humble pie. For those who desire spiritual, mental, and emotional growth, introspection is the first step. If we fail to identify our shortcomings, then we build a roadblock to learning and growing into the best that we can become in our lifetime.

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” Jeremiah 17:9 NLT

Have you ever witnessed “baby rivalry?” Two babies are sitting on the floor playing with their toys, inevitably one looks over and decides he or she wants the other baby’s toy, and the spat begins. Learned behavior is rarely the basis for a child so young to make a concerted effort to crawl and snatch the toy away from the other baby who is perfectly content.

The concept that human beings naturally possess traits that reflect godly love and virtuous characters is far from the truth. It is not an automatic response to think and act appropriately and with restraint. We struggle every day to choose right over wrong. The trait of self-control takes a lifetime to achieve. We fight the ongoing battle to suppress our immediate reactions to adversity and develop the habit of using logical and sound reasoning in response to every situation.

All of us possess an internal riot: Self-control has an enemy, and that is our emotions. Anger, rage, and hatred are the precursors that propel us into a mode of self-destruction. When we continue to feed these nonproductive emotions, they develop into enemies that attack from within and enable us to commit dangerous and heinous acts. Problems never can and never will be resolved from the use of our emotions.

Remember that it takes the right situation to reveal a person’s real character.

Based on life experience, all of us have an individualized breaking point. Have you ever been falsely accused? It is a terrible feeling to know that you are innocent, but cannot prove that you are not guilty. One of the first steps to identifying your strengths and weaknesses is to reflect on your response to the accusation.

What about injustice? I can recall standing in line at the store, and the four individuals ahead of me paid for their purchases with debit cards, and when it was my turn, I was asked for my driver’s license to verify the name on my card. As I felt the anger well up, I handed her my license and joked about the change in my hair color since the driver’s license picture was taken.

Anger is a normal response when we have suffered from discrimination, biases, and diabolical plots. However, we must stand-down our rage and not let our thoughts evolve into wrongful words and actions. Once the seed of bitterness is within us, it is impossible to stop the growth until anger becomes rage, and feeling disgruntled flourishes into hatred. Whether it is silent or aloud, say a prayer, and remain calm.

As it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;” Romans 3:10. We are not in the position to judge others; we fight the internal riot of good versus evil every day of our lives. Over-confidence says, “No, I would never do that,” and with that mindset, we place ourselves into the dangerous area of self-reliance. Satan is always ready to tempt and present the perfect situation to make us fall, often into doing the exact things that we said that we would never do. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Romans 7:15

Our Heavenly Father knows our limitations and our failures, and He is always here to forgive us, to help us, and to comfort us. As Believers, we will face a more significant battle than social injustices, or the glass ceiling, or any of the atrocities from the “isms.” For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12

Lest we forget, within three days, 5/31-6/2, the COVID-19 is showing signs of resurgence in the United States with an increase of 40,967 cases and 1,457 deaths. Our heartfelt prayers extend to over 6,000,000 infected individuals and the families of 375,000 individuals who passed away from this vicious disease.

When we place ourselves in God’s hands, He silences the Internal Riot. We do not react. We interact through prayer with the Almighty, who tells us to, “Be still and stay calm,” I am here to rescue you. But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” Exodus 14:13-14

Bible Reading: Exodus 14

God, we desperately need your help. With disease, death, and destruction, our world is so out of control. We make the decision today to place our lives within your hands. We ask this prayer in the Worthy Name of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Young Love

Today, I took a drive to our local park which only had a few people who were practicing social distancing. I chose to stay in my vehicle with the controls set to recirculate the air inside of my truck. As I looked around to capture a shot of the wildlife, I caught a special moment of two young people who were walking slowly and holding hands. It was definitely a priceless moment as the young girl began to run circles slowly around the love of her life, smiling and laughing. When she paused for a breath, I was allowed the perfect distance photo without being too intrusive.

The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. Jeremiah 31:3

Despite the chaos, violence, sickness, and death throughout our world, God still wants us to be aware that He has us in His hands, and love will always exist.

Please Rescue Us God

Please rescue us God cause we don’t know how much more we can take

You said that we are your image and that means the way we look is not a mistake

With dirt in your hands, you shaped us and made us human

Please rescue us God cause we don’t know how much more we can take

We took your perfect plan, and we messed it up with hate and

We didn’t realize that when we hate the creation, we also hate the Creator

Please rescue us God cause we just went too far this time and we don’t know our way back

Troubles have us so angry and confused we are forgetting that your Son is coming for us

Please rescue us, God, we are losing hope, and we don’t know how much more we can take.

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Downtime is Beneficial

Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

Knowing that every week, I have 24 hours to shut out the chaos and confusion of our present environment keeps me grounded and focused on the goodness of God. Like me, there are thousands of individuals who observe the 7th day Sabbath from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset that is mentioned in Exodus 20:8-11.

There are many benefits to putting aside all secular activities for 24 hours, to give 1/7th of our busy lives to focus on God, enjoy physical rest, and relaxation. Personally, I look forward to the weekly 7th-day spiritual sabbatical that lifts my spirits and enables me to have a stronger relationship with God. Since one 24-hr day is devoted to cease all activities that are not spiritual, it keeps me on a procrastination-free schedule during the other six days.

Friday is the day we utilize to complete the outstanding activities of the week, to cook our meals for two days, clean, and prepare for the incoming day of rest. When I was employed, part of my preparation was completed on Thursday night. Once I made the decision to commit to Sabbath-keeping, my physical and mental strength increased. Because preparation for the Day of Rest requires a systematic approach for completion of the to-do lists prior to sunset, I developed organizational habits that were beneficial to an enhanced way of life.

Often the question arises, “How do you know that you are honoring the Sabbath as God requires?” Think about a trip to a Christian Spa, which provides a quiet and serene environment with lots of amazing scenery. It is the participant’s decision to create a personalized atmosphere with soothing and uplifting music, non-secular materials, no interruptions from ringing phones, and numerous text messages. Forget the electronic tech addiction, and enjoy your pre-prepared healthy food, and the opportunity to get plenty of sleep. Basically, a restful day of relaxation with prayer, praise, singing, studying the Word of God, reading, and lots of joyful laughter.

Nature plays a vital role in keeping our focus on God and His awesome love. Research to discover lakes and other scenic places that are not frequented by mass crowds. Take the time to walk or hike, hear the melodious songs of the birds and breathe in the fresh, unpolluted air. There are still many places that provide a time to reflect on God and the beauty that still exists. The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him. Psalm 24:1

I am not promoting a religious denomination, that is undoubtedly a personal choice. I am merely pointing out that God knew the damage that the hardships of life would cause to our spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical bodies. It is His wonderful gift to give us a day that will rejuvenate, refresh, and restore our minds and bodies–and all we have to do is cease our ordinary activities for 24 hours.

Nike had a slogan to “Just do it!” I can promise you that there are many benefits to keeping the 7th day Sabbath. It has enhanced my relationship with God, my medical diagnoses have stabilized due to no stress, the aging process of my body has decreased (still no wrinkles), and my mood is consistent. Most of my life, insomnia wreaked havoc, leaving me weary every day. Since dutiful Sabbath-keeping, I am enjoying a peaceful REM sleep.

All in my life is not perfect; even so, when troublesome times come, I remind myself that I belong to God. As I release my burdens through prayer and study, I have stopped resolving challenges based on my experience. If the God who created me also rested on the Sabbath; And by the seventh day, God had finished the work He had been doing, so on that day, He rested from all His work. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it because on that day, He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished. Genesis 2:2-3; then, I believe that He knows what is best for my well-being.

Make the change, it is a win-win situation, and incorporate the Sabbath into your life. God’s plan for our lives always ends in victory.

Please note that this Devotional is a reprint that has been edited to remove my practice of attendance in the church due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prayer for today: God, I desire the lifestyle that you developed for me. Please give me the courage to remember the 7th day Sabbath, and make the decision to just do it and make a positive change in my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen!
