The Believer’s Heart

The Believer’s Heart Devotional Reading July 27, 2023

When the believer’s heart begins to lose its way, the Holy Spirit always reminds us that we are deviating from the Path of Righteousness. Losing faith and courage reveals our doubt and disbelief in the Sovereign God who is our only constancy in life.

Our human hearts are feeble and changeable. We allow our situation or concerns about an unknown future to cloud our trust in God. Without steadfast faith and trust in God, we trust our feelings. And then the domino effect happens, we develop plans that result in disobedience and produce disastrous results.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go, I will guide you with My eye.” —Psalm 32:8

This morning, as I reflected on the direction of my life, the Holy Spirit reminded me of my recent vow of surrender and to trust and obey God in all circumstances including the unknown future.

The morning Devotional was entitled, Trust and Obey. We serve an On-Time God! As I listened to the historical origin of the hymn, “Trust and Obey” the narrator stated, “Trusting in and Obeying God can only be found in the heart of a believer who is determined to maintain their faith in God despite the presenting circumstances.”

When we are unsure of the direction of our lives and where we stand in our relationship with Christ, all we need to do is to seek God through prayer, meditation, and study of the Scriptures. And then we patiently wait for His answer and guidance.

The Divine Plea: “When you said, seek My face, my heart said to you, your face, LORD, I will seek.” —Psalm 27:8

The Believer’s Response: “To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O, my God, I trust in You…Show me Your ways O LORD, Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation, On You I wait all day.” —Psalm 25:1, 2, 4-5

God is aware of the condition of our fragile hearts and how easily we forget that He has never failed us. Yet, in His overwhelming love, He picks us up even when we fall. Still, as believers, we have the responsibility to exercise faith and to trust and obey His Divine plan. Even in our anguish, we must never lose hope!

“Through the Lord’s mercies, we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 24 ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘Therefore I hope in Him!’ ” —Lamentations 3:22-24

Our initial response to awakening to the mercies of a new day reveals whether or not we fully trust in God and possess the willingness to obey. Do we pray the prayer of surrender? David prayed, “Teach me your way, O LORD and lead Me in a smooth path, because of my enemies” (Psalm 27:11).

God has given us a sound mind to identify and perform life’s essential tasks, enter His presence through morning and evening worship, achieve excellent job performance, take care of ourselves, children, and spouses, complete our personal care, maintain a clean environment, purchase healthy food and modest clothing, and develop a financial budget.

“Who is the man that fears [reverences] the LORD? Him shall He teach in the way he chooses.” Psalm 25:12

Although we are capable of completing our routine tasks, in humility, we ask for God’s blessings and direction in our lives. We invite God into every aspect of our lives because we love and trust Him. Never forget that God promises to guide the righteous in His chosen path for us. With determination, take the stance that you are a believer in the Omniscient and Omnipotent God who can never fail!

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me, you can do nothing.” —John 15:5

Jesus reminds us of the relationship we must maintain with Him to have spiritual growth. The fruit is the Fruit of the Spirit—Galatians 5:22-23.

Yes, we can go through the process of completing our daily tasks and making decisions by relying on our human wisdom. Without asking for Divine Intervention and God’s mercies, we are functioning with the same mindset as unbelievers who play the Game of Chance every day in their lives.

The Response of the Believer’s Heart: We love, trust, and obey God because He is the only Constancy [Always Faithful and Dependable] in our lives. God’s steadfast promises provide reassurance to our wavering hearts! No one else can proclaim, “I change not!” Is there anything too hard for Me? His promises are found throughout the Bible!

The Divine Promise: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name, you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the Lord your God the Holy One of Israel your Savior.” —Isaiah 43: 1-3

Our Response: We surrender to the Sovereignty of God because He has promised to be with us throughout our earthly journey. The believer’s heart has faith and trust in Jesus’ Strength which we receive through the Holy Spirit. So, we pray in faith for God’s blessings and invite the Holy Spirit into our lives by asking for wisdom, guidance, and protection against physical and spiritual warfare.

“I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.” (Psalm 7:17).

Like David, we acknowledge our desperate need for the Divine Intervention of the Triune God. And because God is, “I AM that I AM”, the believer’s heart responds with love and loyalty which is demonstrated by our faith, trust, and obedience. Amen.

Prayer: Lord God, we come to You in faith renewing our covenant to trust and obey You. Forgive us for worrying about our circumstances and the unknown future. We believe that You are the only Sovereign Triune God! We love You and ask for the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We need and pray for the blessings of wisdom, guidance, and protection. This prayer we ask in the Worthy Name of Jesus, Amen.

Building Bridges of Love

Building Bridges of Love Devotional Reading, July 26, 2023

“Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: you shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” —Matthew 22:37-39

We live in a world full of chaos, confusion, and a pervading deficit of love. Where do we stand? Are we going with the flow of a loveless mainstream or are we in total opposition because our hearts are filled with Agape love? The status of our hearts is revealed by our demeanor [our outward behavior, how we interact with others] and our lifestyles.

“And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” —1 Corinthians 13:2

Our relationship with Christ is based on love. When we possess the willingness to make Christ our first love, we are empowered by the strength of the Holy Spirit to love God with our hearts, souls, and minds. Not only do we put God first, but we also see others through the loving eyes of Christ.

Many Christians think they love God, but they are in love with themselves. The true condition of our hearts is revealed by our earthly pursuits and interactions with other people. Our spoken words, habits, behaviors, and lifestyles disclose who our first love is and the secret desires within our hearts.

“It takes the right situation or conversation to reveal our true character.”

“The young man said to Him, ‘All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?’ 21 Jesus said to him, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’ 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” —Matthew 19:20-22

“The selfish, money-loving man lives only to secure for himself the riches, honors, and pleasures of this world. But with the follower of Christ…For Christ’s sake, he will…deny self, that he may aid in the great work of saving souls who are without Christ and without hope in the world.” EGW

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” —Romans 7:15

Even as Christians we are in the struggle of our lives. To deny self goes against everything our carnal heart desires. Our innate focus is always on ourselves—every day we suffer an internal battle to please our sinful hearts or to bow in surrender to God.

“And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ ” —Luke 18:13

Yet, if in love and faith, we willingly repent and surrender ourselves to God by praying the publican’s [tax collector’s prayer] then the Holy Spirit will give us the spiritual strength to put our love for Christ into action.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such, there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” —Galatians 5:22-25

When we decide to love God with all of our hearts, souls, and minds, the power of the Holy Spirit enters our hearts. Not only do we receive spiritual insight and wisdom, but we also take the appropriate action to change our priorities and behaviors. We begin to worship God through prayer, fasting, and diligent study of the Scriptures.

The internal love we have for Christ is shown externally. We begin to treat others with love and respect. Our thoughts, desires, spoken words, and habits change because we are experiencing a transformation of our characters. Our old demeanor is replaced with the Fruit of the Spirit. We no longer react as we are treated. With a heart overflowing with love for Christ, we will love others as Christ does.

Now it is time for us to witness. The Holy Spirit will reveal opportunities for spreading the love of Christ through witnessing. Sometimes in a conversation, and at other times, we smile and only have the chance to say Good Morning.

Jesus’ earthly life demonstrated His love for everyone. Jesus gave the rejected, the impoverished, and all who were looked down on by the Pharisees hope for a better life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Building Bridges of Love is how Jesus conducted His earthly life.

The Beatitudes—Matthew 5:1-12

And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. 2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Christ is truly our Role-Model. Abused and mistreated, He could have called legions of angels at any time, yet, in humility and total surrender, His life was filled with love and compassion for humanity. Even on Calvary’s cross, He bridged the gap with love for the thief on the cross and promised him eternal life.

Building Bridges of Love Requires the Human Effort of Humility, Love, Faith, and the Divine Intervention of the Holy Spirit

“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” —Ephesians 4:32

Our greatest opportunity for demonstrating the love of God is through our interaction with others. With love in our hearts and smiles on our faces, we always say good morning and speak positive words which reflect Christ. Our Christian demeanor gives others hope. Showing the love of Christ to others, it gives the recipient something to think about.

As they ponder on the experience, if their hearts are receptive then the Holy Spirit enters their hearts. Can you imagine meeting the people in heaven that you showered with the love of Christ in your earthly life? We may never know the outcome of our loving kindness to others. Still, our goal is to represent Christ every day to every person by Building Bridges of Love.

Prayer: God, we pray for the understanding and desire of Your agape love. As we perform our earthly duties, Lord, we pray that we represent You through a Christ-like loving demeanor and gently spoken words. In Jesus’ Loving name, we pray, Amen.

God’s Perfect Plan for You

God’s Perfect Plan for You Devotional Reading, July 25, 2023

Created in the image of God encompasses more than our physical bodies. We also have a mind that can acquire and process godly knowledge and apply it to our lives to achieve the highest quality of life. We were blessed with the ability to dream and pursue our goals, yet, God has set boundaries on our human wisdom. The future will never be ours to predict, so we live day by day and trust God with our unknown future.

In Psalm chapter 25, verses 8-10, David tells us that God’s Paths always lead to goodness. Divine Intervention: “Good and upright is the LORD…The humble He guides in justice And the humble He teaches His way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth.”

It is wise to pray and seek God’s blessings before making all decisions [even the decisions that appear to be insignificant]. Otherwise, we will face negative consequences that can lead to discouragement and unexpected life events. To avoid making mistakes, it’s best to serve God with humility and pray while waiting for the Lord’s guidance.

Human Effort: We put all of our faith and trust in God’s plans and directions because His paths always produce victory and always bring glory to His Holy and Righteous Character.

Our Prayer: “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” —Psalm 25:4-5, NIV

Jehovah-Rapha, The God Who [Still] Heals Devotional Reading, July 24, 2023

From Miriam to Naaman to the paralyzed man at the Pool of Bethsaida and throughout the Bible, we read of the many times that Jesus healed those created in His image. Not only did Jesus use prophets in the Old Testament as human instruments who received God’s Divine power to heal others, but in Jesus’ life on earth, His ministry was one of spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical healing.

The Apostle John tells us, “This is the disciple who testifies of these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.” —John 21:24-25

One of my favorite miracles is the one of Jesus raising the widow’s son from the dead in Nain found in Luke chapter 7, verses 11-17.

And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. 12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. 14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still.

And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. 15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. 16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. 17 And this rumor of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

After the people witnessed Jesus speaking the words for the young man to arise, the people feared and glorified God and those same people spread the message of Jesus raising the widow’s son throughout Judaea and the region. According to historians, Judaea was approximately 185 miles in length.

Whether we study Jesus’ life and His ministry of healing and raising the dead, hear others’ testimonies of healing or receive healing ourselves, there is a vast difference in our response to Jesus’ healing power, we tell very few individuals. The same Jesus who walked this earth with love and compassion, healing and raising the dead is the same Jesus in heaven who is our Heavenly Intercessor and Healer.

Testimony: In March of 2021, I relocated to the Eastern Florida Coast. After living in states with snowy winters, I was overjoyed because of the scenic ocean and the tropical weather. But my joy was short-lived. Two months later, I was in the hospital emergency room experiencing a full-blown asthma attack.

For the remainder of 2021 and 2022, I had multiple visits to the emergency room. I was prescribed a steroid nasal spray, steroid daily inhalers, a rescue inhaler, and around-the-clock nebulizer treatments. My diagnosis, Uncontrolled Asthma. All medications have adverse side effects ranging from minimum to maximum impact on the patient.

I experienced maximum side effects. Not only did the sound of my voice change to a raspy tone, but the medication also produced tachycardia [fast heart rate] and arrhythmia [abnormal heart rhythm], resulting in my pulmonologist changing my medication. My condition did not improve which resulted in additional prescriptions for oral steroids and receiving intravenous steroid medication in the emergency room.

In June of 2022, I had an Echocardiogram which revealed four abnormal heart conditions [side effects from steroids and uncontrolled asthma]. One of the conditions involved the pulmonary artery and is considered incurable and progressive. My prior medical history included a normal heart, yet, without the proper exchange of oxygen in my lungs, my life would be nonexistent. During the consult with my pulmonologist, we agreed that I would continue my current polypharmacy medication regimen.

On December 29th, 2022, I had an emergency room visit for another vicious asthma attack. The patient treatment area behind the double doors was full of patients diagnosed with COVID, so the waiting area was converted into an overflow area for the triage and treatment of additional patients. As a nurse, I was aware that my Immune system was compromised from two years of unstable asthma.

Although I wore a mask for the ER visit in December, on January 5th, I was back in the emergency room with a subsequent asthma attack and was also diagnosed with COVID. I was treated with more Intravenous steroids and given prescriptions for anti-nausea and oral steroid medications.

The COVID variant that I contracted included severe nausea and vomiting which impacted my ability to eat and drink. For three weeks, I lived off of fruit cups and sips of water and ginger ale resulting in an unhealthy weight loss of 15 lbs. My physical strength was greatly impacted. And I also lost my senses of smell and taste for eight weeks which finally returned at the end of February 2023.

Every day, I prayed a prayer of repentance and was prepared to die. But one day, while I was watching a video short on Isaiah 60:22, “… At the right time, I, the LORD, will make it happen.” I heard the words, “I will heal you.” And I believed!

“The Lord sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness, You restore him to full health.” —Psalm 41:3

Although my recovery was very slow, I did not die! Nor do I have any residual effects from COVID or the massive amounts of steroids that I received. My voice returned to its normal pitch and tone. I have regained my physical strength. But most importantly my faith in God has matured. I have come to totally rely on God’s will for my life. “Be still and know that I am God…” (Psalm 46:10).

Fast forward to June of 2023 for my second Echocardiogram which revealed that my heart is normal! The incurable, progressive condition involving my heart’s pulmonary artery no longer exists! And my asthma is controlled with the use of only one inhaler. I am no longer on nasal spray or oral steroids, nor do I have to use a nebulizer. And no more ER hospital visits since January 5th. I know who my Healer is and I praise the Worthy Name of Jesus every day!

When I felt that I would die, I did not pray a prayer of negotiation, “God, if You heal me, I will __,” [fill in the blank]. I focused on my relationship with Christ, praying for His will to be done with prayers of heartfelt surrender and repentance.

Although, Jesus spoke to me and said, I will heal you, there were times during my slow recovery period when I felt discouraged and forsaken by God. I had to learn to be faithful and totally depend on God. His timing is always the right timing! And it wasn’t until my faith strengthened and I committed my life to God that I received complete healing.

Does God say no to our prayers asking to be healed? Sometimes we do not receive physical healing.

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” —2 Corinthians 12:9

The Apostle Paul prayed three times for the thorn in his flesh to be removed, but three times Jesus answered no. There was no bitterness in Paul’s heart, he accepted the will of God for His life. Despite his poor eyesight, 13-14 books of the 27 books of the New Testament are attributed to the Apostle Paul.

And when Paul knew that the end of his earthly journey was near, he proclaimed, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” —2 Timothy 4:7-8, NIV

Sometimes we must drink from the bitter cup, yet, never lose your faith in God. If we are faithful in adversity, remember that God is always faithful. He will sustain us even if we do not receive physical healing. Pray and believe! Jesus always gives us spiritual healing of peace, joy, contentment, and mental and emotional strength.

Our primary focus on healing must be on the spiritual condition of our hearts. “Lord, please cleanse me from all unrighteousness and fill me with the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.” Are we preparing ourselves for the Second Coming of Jesus and eternal life where our minds and bodies will be made perfect?

If we receive healing, what will we do with our restored minds and bodies? Will we possess a heart of gratitude like the one of the ten lepers whom Jesus healed and returned to say, Thank You? Will we dedicate our hearts, minds, and souls to serving God till our last breath? Will we tell everyone about Jesus’ love, grace, and mercies—sharing our testimony of healing?

Our response to the healing power of Jehovah-Rapha should reflect the same response as those who spread the message of Jesus raising the widow of Nain’s son to life. In a world filled with mental and physical illnesses, despair, and hopelessness, someone needs to share that we have a Savior, Jesus Christ who is a Healer. Will that someone be you?

Jehovah-Rapha is a Healer! “And Christ is the same compassionate physician now that He was during His earthly ministry. In Him, there is healing balm for every disease, restoring power for every infirmity.” EGW

Scripture: “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes, we are healed.” —Isaiah 53:5

Prayer: Jesus, by your stripes, we are healed. We thank You for Your love, grace, mercies, and healing power. We love You. Amen.

Self-Control Leads to Optimal Health Sabbath Devotional July 21, 2023

“For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which is God’s.” —1 Corinthians 6:20

By managing our time and being mindful of the stimuli we allow to influence us, we can improve our intellect and strengthen our relationship with Christ. Yet, many believers are suffering from anxiety and worries which have escalated to physical illnesses from the never-ending stressors of life. Instead of having the peace of God, their lives are filled with chaos.

Something is wrong! Despite having to-do lists, they often find themselves struggling to complete their daily tasks. Never having enough time causes their lives to become a burden. When we perceive a situation as impossible, we develop a sense of hopelessness which leaves us feeling too drained to pray. The lack of prayer always isolates the believer from God resulting in the emotional distress of discouragement, guilt, and a sense of failure.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” —Romans 12:2

Unfortunately, Christians are just as vulnerable and caught up in today’s increasingly rapid pace of life which causes more problems than it solves. Overwork and busyness lead to mental fatigue, poor nutrition, a decline in our cognition, emotional instability, poor physical health, and spiritual bankruptcy. Overwhelmed by the chaos, we stop praying and forget God’s many promises to help us in our distress.

Overloaded schedules along with the hurried pace of life create mental weariness and physical fatigue that obscures the mental acuity necessary to identify the reasons for one’s chaotic lifestyle. As we go about our daily lives, we are often confronted with “Distractions” that always hinder the completion of everyday tasks and goals. While it may be easy to dismiss these distractions as normal occurrences, it’s important to remember they are a form of spiritual warfare.

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” —Ephesians 6:11-12, NIV

Although we are constantly engaged in spiritual battles, we can discern the difference between distractions and trials by the outcomes. Distractions are temptations that separate us from God by turning our attention away from Him. Trials enable us to grow spiritually and develop a righteous character. When facing the unexpected challenges of spiritual warfare, we must remain vigilant and prepared to fight.

We know the daily distractions that trouble us are warfare because they are always the things that capture our interests and cater to our preferences. This is not a coincidence. Temptations are skillfully developed by Satan and his evil angels [present on this earth] to disrupt our peace and separate us from God. Yet, Satan and his demonic angels have limitations enforced by Christ—they are not Omniscient, All-Knowing, and cannot read our minds. We are creatures of habit, so they create personalized distractions by simply observing our behaviors and habits.

Satan also uses people to interrupt our already busy life. Although we are commanded to help others, we must pray for wisdom in our level of involvement and monitor our time spent outside of our too-busy lives. Our priorities are to maintain our relationship with Christ and establish a healthy balance in our lives.

Reflection: Are my decisions [or someone else’s decisions] producing my chaotic lifestyle? Yes!

The number one distraction in 2023 is excessive screen time. At the end of the day, to relax, we watch our favorite programs, enjoy social media, play online games, shop online, or text and talk on our cell phones. We lose track of time and before we realize it, we have spent hours entertaining ourselves instead of praying a prayer of gratitude for our provisions and asking for spiritual strength.

“Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.” —2 John 1:8

It is easy to feel defeated when thinking about an unhealthy lifestyle. Where does the energy come from to make changes? To acknowledge our situation by admitting that something is definitely wrong but failing to take action because we don’t know where to start will never produce good results.

The only way for believers to possess an optimal level of health is to stay on the Path of Righteousness and we need Divine Help to accomplish that life-long goal!

Self-control is the answer to most of our difficulties. Yet, we require spiritual strength from the Holy Spirit who empowers us to develop action plans to rid ourselves of all the unhealthy habits that allowed various forms of chaos into our lives.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” —Galatians 5:22-23

We are not helpless! God always requires human effort before we receive Divine Help. God has given us the ability to practice self-control. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. It is the ability to control our thoughts, emotions, and actions. We can say no to distractions and disruptions.

Every human being created in the image of God has received the gift of a rational mind with the power to think, the ability to reason, and to be resourceful by making choices that enhance our lives. We are capable of assessing the causative factors which prevent us from achieving optimal health in every area of our lives and taking appropriate actions to immediately remedy the situation.

Without biblical knowledge and a spiritual understanding of the Scriptures, we will not practice self-control or strive to live our best life. Our desires will lead us to follow the same destructive path that unbelievers are on.

In studying the Creation of Earth, found in Genesis chapter 1, we notice that Jesus was intentional and systematic in creating the Earth. “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:3-4).

Human Effort Required: When studying the Creation story, there is something that we probably have overlooked—”And God saw that it was good.” Jesus did not rush through the Creation process, He paused to affirm that everything He created on that day was good before He moved forward. With humility, we must possess the willingness to take a daily pause break and ask ourselves, Am I living my best life? Pray for Divine Help to change your mindset and lifestyle. Confess and repent of the lack of self-control, and take action to change your life!

We were created to live healthy, productive lives. Invest in yourself by eliminating all obstacles that threaten to weaken your sound mind, physical health, and spiritual relationship with Christ. Commit to strengthening your mind, body, and soul, by practicing self-control. It is not an easy task! And others may be offended by your decision to abruptly change your lifestyle, but remain strong, every Christian has the spiritual responsibility to uphold God’s Righteous Standards!

Establish boundaries for yourself and for those who tread on your time or bring chaos into your life.

Eliminate purchasing tangible items. You have everything you need. An overabundance of physical things creates a cluttered mind and a spirit of greed.
Time Management–Too many things on your to-do list prevent you from enjoying life. Make a realistic schedule that includes time with God. Rest and relaxation along with the ability to laugh and have fun creates a work-life-spiritual balance.
Purchase nutritious foods and cook your meals. High-Calorie convenience foods rob the body of strength and wreck the intellect.
Choose an alternate outside environment to exercise. We require fresh air and sunshine. The gym is okay when the weather is bad, but does nothing for us spiritually. God created nature for us!
Change your temperament. Impatience, harshness, anger, unforgiveness, and criticism are negative behaviors that prevent God’s internal gifts of peace and joy.
Learn to establish boundaries regarding your time. For those who desire constant help and favors, do not enable them. And respectfully decline invitations that serve little to no purpose in your life.

With positive changes, you can enjoy the peace of God. Once your lifestyle begins to improve, take a break. Go on a mini vacation, preferably a nature trip, even if it’s only for one day. You will feel re-energized and gain confidence from your effort to create positive changes.

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles.” —Psalm 34:17

God honors our diligence when we do our part in restoring equilibrium to our mind and body. The Holy Spirit will empower you by refreshing your mind, body, and soul. Deliverance from our troubles is one of God’s promises.

Pray: Utilize some of your extra time by spending additional time in worship. God is our priority. We receive mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual strength from the Holy Spirit. Always take the time to pray for guidance, wisdom, and protection.

Study the Word of God: Choose a chapter of the Bible and study it every day. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you discernment of God’s Truth. It is best to read the same chapter twice a day. If you cannot recall a significant part of what you studied then do not move forward. Restudy the chapter for 2-3 days.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” —Philippians 4:13

We can achieve optimal mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health! Since the stress of former counterproductive habits is eliminated, consider new hobbies and activities. Yet, we must always be on guard for the distractions and habits that kept us in the bondage of chaos. Take a daily pause and prayer break to ask for the Divine strength and wisdom to stay on track to living a life of optimal health.

Throughout our day, we can meditate on the Scriptures, listen to inspirational music and pray. The Holy Spirit will provide spiritual vitality to our minds, bodies, and souls. With determination, self-control, and Divine help, our lives will be organized and filled with peace and our hearts with overflowing joy.

With the human effort of self-control and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, we can live spiritually healthy and prosperous lives. Amen!

Did you know that the busyness of life is a significant strategy of spiritual warfare? Distractions are Satan’s number one tactic to keep us from maintaining a close relationship with God. The little obsolete things that are meaningless waste our valuable time. Well-meaning individuals who ask for favors can add additional burdens to our already full schedule. At the end of the day, we are too exhausted to worship God. So, we promise to do better tomorrow, say a quick prayer, and fall asleep.

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” —1 Corinthians 10:31

Reflection: What exactly am I doing with my time?

Certainly, it is not our intention to waste the blessing of each new day. Yet, every believer is accountable for how they use the 24 hours received from God’s faithfulness and mercies. Take immediate action! Pray a prayer of repentance and ask for the wisdom to restructure your life. Thinking about yesterday and how we failed to accomplish the important tasks on our to-do list and feeling guilty over days of missed worship is counterproductive. We can never retrieve lost time.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” —James 1:5

Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal all time-eating obstacles including the behaviors of procrastination. Be honest! Do you allow others to interrupt your daily schedule? Pray for the courage to respectfully decline and say no [even to your whims of spontaneity].

With enthusiasm, approach your plan to identify and eliminate time-wasting activities, and move forward with determination. Begin today by making a written time log of the activities you have completed and the unfinished tasks. Revise your schedule and make worship with God your number one priority. Be consistent with the designated times that you choose for worship.

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” —Matthew 6:6

Restructuring your life to achieve the highest level of productivity appears to be the goal. But spending time in worship with God every day is our spiritual goal which is the believer’s priority. Minute Devotionals are fine for a quick read while taking a work break, but do not substitute for the Prayer and Bible Study needed daily to enrich our relationship with Christ.

Every morning and evening, we need uninterrupted time with God [which includes spiritual meditation] to receive the blessings to replenish our minds, bodies, and souls. A hurry-up mindset produces ritualistic worship. As a result, we miss out on spiritual blessings necessary to maintain our relationship with Christ. No time for God results in spiritual depletion. Rushing through worship does not include time for the Holy Spirit to respond to the needs of our soul.

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer.” —1 Peter 3:12

When I transitioned from direct patient care to a corporate setting, the constant grind produced extreme mental fatigue. By 2 pm, my stamina was down, and I had little energy to work for three more hours plus drive the hour-long journey home. The overwhelming fatigue threatened to overpower my ability to cope with the complexities of the job.

When I applied for the job, I prayed and was confident that transitioning to a non-clinical setting was God’s blessing. But my faith was weak, and I began to doubt whether or not God had blessed me. Discouraged, I made plans to look for another job. When God blesses us, He does not allow Satan to rob us of our blessings.

Holy Spirit to the rescue! One evening, I read a Devotional on using one’s lunchtime and work breaks to pray for strength. Believe me, I never thought about having worship while on the job. On my afternoon breaks, I separated myself and prayed for the blessings of mental acuity and physical strength. Does God answer our prayers for help? Yes, He does! The Holy Spirit gave me the spiritual strength to complete my shift and the guardian angels watched over me as I drove home.

Although the Quality versus Quantity concept does not apply to worship, we do not have to conduct lengthy worship sessions on our jobs. From the whisper of our prayers, we receive supernatural power for our minds and bodies.

“And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.” —Matthew 14:23

One thing is for certain when we invite the presence of God to come into our hearts through prayer, we will always receive the spiritual blessings of strength, wisdom, and peace. We have the privilege of praying any time of the day or night. With Divine Intervention, the activities of daily living and meaningful worship can easily be accomplished when our lives are in sync with God’s plans.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” —Jeremiah 29:13

Commit to restoring your close relationship with Christ. God has given us every spiritual resource we need to worship Him in Spirit and Truth. All He asks of us is to put Him first by dedicating enough time to seek Him in worship. At least once a week, listen to an online sermon on the faithfulness of God. Attending church weekly is not enough to feed our starving souls. We need to worship more than ever in these perilous times.

Prayer: God, we love You and we just want to say Thank You for your amazing love, grace, and mercies. We need help in identifying and eliminating the behaviors and activities that are consuming our time and keeping us from having meaningful worship with You. My younger cousin applied for an internal position in Human Resources, but unfortunately, she didn’t have the necessary academic qualifications. Despite this, she did extremely well in the interview and expressed her willingness to complete the required courses. Due to her track record of being a great employee who consistently exceeded company goals, the executive decision was made to put the position on hold and pay for her education. My cousin completed the program and was ultimately promoted to the Human Resources Department.

We are created with the ability to pursue our dreams and goals on earth. Our desire and willingness to achieve, even though we face unforeseen struggles, reveals our inner strength of endurance and perseverance. To reach our goal, we face adversity head-on and tell ourselves that failure is not an option. When things get tough and we’ve done all we can, we approach God in prayer for His help. When our dreams come to fruition, we are overjoyed! Yet, the teamwork of our effort and God’s Divine Intervention allowed us to accomplish our goals.

Do we set spiritual goals? The general answer is usually yes about desiring eternal life, but the requirement to live righteously in our earthly lives to receive our reward is often met with resistance. The Christian Community is divided in their opinions about God’s expectation for us to live righteously. Some feel that God requires too much and we cannot meet His righteous expectations and those who are striving to stay on the Path of Righteousness proclaim, “With God’s Help, Yes, we can live righteously!”

Can We Live Righteously? What is Righteousness? We have four references.

“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness, no one will see the Lord.” —Hebrews 12:14

Righteousness is defined as God’s Divine and Holy Attributes and Christ’s Perfect Righteous Character. We demonstrate spiritual transformation through the constant resistance to sin as reflected by our choices, character traits, thoughts, habits, and actions which should always reflect Christ’s Character.

“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” —Ephesians 2:8-9

Because of Christ’s death, in faith, we receive Salvation through His grace. Grace is unmerited favor—we receive what we do not deserve. Through Grace, we are covered by Christ’s Righteousness which allows us to receive the gift of eternal life, but it is our choice whether or not to do so.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” —John 3:16

Our faith proclaims, “I believe in Jesus Christ that He is the Son of God who died for my sins. I accept Jesus as my personal Savior, and I confess and repent of my sins.”

Our love for Christ allows the Holy Spirit to produce a heart that experiences daily spiritual growth and transformation. We no longer desire sinful activities. And yes, we strive to live righteously because of our overwhelming love for our Savior and Redeemer. The human effort of daily surrender and obedience indicates that we desire a heart-to-heart relationship with Jesus. The Holy Spirit is always ready to provide us with the spiritual strength to resist all forms of sin in our earthly journey. Pray continuously!

“But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct…” —1 Peter 1:15

We cannot gain knowledge of God’s Righteous Attributes, the Character of Christ, and what God expects of us through mere guesswork or speculation. The diligent study of the Bible is required to learn about God’s standards of Righteousness and how we must conduct ourselves. Still, we cannot live righteously by using only our efforts. When faced with a dilemma, immediately pray for Help. The Holy Spirit is our Teacher and speaks to us through our conscience when faced with right and wrong and truth versus error.

“If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.” —1 John 2:29

The following is an excerpt of a testimonial from a Crosswalk article entitled “What is Righteous?”

I used to think righteous living had more to do with behavioral modification than heart transformation. Outward appearance of holiness was what mattered to me, rather than Spirit-filled change. I thought that if I tried to stop cussing as much and stop watching rated-R movies, then that meant I was living righteously. While those are good and righteous works, the more I read the Bible, the more I learned that I had it backward. Righteousness actually produces those works, not the other way around.

There are times when we will fall into sin. “For a righteous man may fall seven times And rise again, But the wicked shall fall by calamity” (Proverbs 24:16). “In this fallen world, the difference between a righteous and an unrighteous man is not whether they fall or not, but rather what they do when they fall.” Christ Church

King David’s Prayer of Repentance: “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight…” —Psalm 51:1-4

“No repentance is genuine that does not work reformation. The righteousness of Christ is not a cloak to cover unconfessed and unforsaken sin; it is a principle of life that transforms the character and controls the conduct. Holiness is wholeness for God; it is the entire surrender of heart and life to the indwelling of the principles of heaven.”-The Desire of Ages

Do not fall prey to the mindset of “God understands that I will commit sins” or “I’m a work-in-progress” to justify unrighteous sinful actions. Remember that Satan brings spiritual warfare into every Christian’s life. Sin places us into Spiritual Bankruptcy separating us from a Holy and Righteous God. Continuous sinning changes our desire for righteousness and has fatal consequences.

Living righteously usually causes separation from family, friends, and significant others who are unbelievers. Do not follow your feelings! Never lose your reward of eternal life for someone who has no desire to surrender their heart to love Christ.

When we love Christ and have the determination to be loyal followers, the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual discernment to recognize temptation and the strength to resist evil. We have a Spiritual Team who is just a prayer away. Yes, living righteously is within our reach. Amen.

Every day a thousand choices present themselves to us, each one more complex and convoluted than the last. How is the modern Christian expected to figure out the will of God in their lives? What compounds the problem are the multitude of voices and Instagram-celebrities that promote their own unique way of following God. When faced with such complexities, perhaps the solution is to go back to the basics. gcu.edu

Back to the Basics are always Biblical and requires us to study the Scriptures under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Knowledge of God’s Righteous standards and spiritual wisdom form the spiritual foundation to live a Christ-Centered, Bible-Based life.

“In Him, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace…” —Ephesians 1:7.

To receive Salvation, every Christian believer accepts Jesus as their personal Savior and agrees that they are redeemed from sin by the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” —1 John 1:9.

It is our responsibility to pray daily for the forgiveness of our sins. Although, we are aware of wilful sins, not every sin is intentional. At times we commit sins because of learned behaviors and harsh spoken words. Therefore, we pray and ask for the forgiveness of our sins [as often as necessary] and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal our character traits that displease God.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” —Hebrews 4:15-16

We express our prayers of gratitude for God’s continuous love, grace, and mercy bestowed upon us. It is for humanity that Jesus sacrificed His life, allowing us to receive unlimited forgiveness for our sins and weaknesses and also to live forever in the New Heaven and New Earth.

“For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” —Ephesians 2:8-9

Jesus tells us that we receive Salvation and Redemption as a result of God’s grace. Our heart-to-heart relationship with Jesus is based on our love and faith in God. We cannot work our way to heaven. The reward of eternal life will be given individually and is not based on our pastor, our church membership, the various theological concepts of a particular denomination, or good deeds.

According to Matthew chapter 24 and the book of Revelation, we are living in the last days of Earth’s existence. Not enough emphasis is placed on possessing a foundation of biblical truths. Studying the Bible has never been optional! Spiritual warfare includes deception accomplished through our senses of vision and hearing.

Without studying the Bible, we cannot use human wisdom to discern false doctrines. Satan, our enemy is skilled in twisting the Scriptures. The person appears to have concrete knowledge of the Scriptures leading us to believe the words they speak are the Gospel Truth breathed by God!

Reflection: Have I asked the Holy Spirit to reveal any false teachings that I inadvertently embraced as God’s Truth?

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” —Hosea 4:6
History does repeat itself. The Christian Community is in chaos from lack of Scriptural knowledge. God’s Truth is not what we perceive it to be. Each Scripture only has one true meaning. God is aware of our spiritual struggles. He has given us the Holy Spirit to teach and give us discernment of the Holy Scriptures.

The desire and human effort of studying the word of God combined with the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit ensure that we do not embrace false teachings or misinterpret the Bible while studying for ourselves.

Two such erroneous beliefs will cause the loss of eternal life: “Once saved–always saved” which continues to feed the prideful hearts of Christians who feel they have reached spiritual perfection on this earth and do not have to pray for repentance. The second false concept is to “Do your best by doing good on this earth and you will go to heaven.” Jesus says, “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds” (Jeremiah 17:10.).

When our minds are confused and our lives are in a mess, we need to pray, pray, pray! King David acted on his visual, lustful desires leading to the sins of adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband. Yet, God extended love and mercies to David allowing him to confess and repent of his heinous sins.

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your loving kindness: According unto the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my sins and transgressions.” —Psalm 51:1

Every day, we are required to make the tough decision to faithfully surrender in obedience to God’s Will and plans for our lives. From the humility of our repentant hearts [the heart filled with godly sorrow for sinning against God], we pray daily prayers of confession and repentance for our unintentional and our wilful sins against God. “Though we have rebelled against him, to the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness.” —Daniel 9:9

“Through the Lord’s mercies, we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” —Lamentations 3:22-23

Mercy is an attribute of God’s love—we do not receive the penalties we deserve for our continuous disobedience. Every one of us needs the Sovereign mercies of God. Sadly, from the busyness of life, we fail to recognize the benefits of God’s mercy, nor do we thank Him for receiving undeserved favor in our lives. Take a daily time-out to reflect on your life. Our good lives are evidence of the blessings of God’s loving mercies.

Our Heavenly Father God lovingly showers His mercies to keep us from the devastating impact and consequences of our intentional sins which arise from harboring selfishness in our hearts. Yet, we continue to give our attention to self-seeking activities that consume our time. Many refuse [whether intentionally or not] to even dedicate 60 minutes every day to spend time in meaningful worship through prayer and study of the Bible.

We awaken to a new day with a sound mind because of God’s mercies. Angels protect us from the evil Spiritual Warfare prevailing on this earth. We receive our daily necessities of life. Our children are kept safe from physical harm and human trafficking. Many of us have been healed from terminal or life-threatening illnesses, but still, we refuse to honor God through surrender and obedience.

Jacob confessed his unworthiness: “I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which You have shown Your servant…” —Genesis 32:10

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” —2 Peter 3:9

There is a trending song entitled, “Come, Lord Jesus, we are waiting for You.” Our gracious and merciful God has a remnant who are ready for Jesus to come. Yet, many believers are in a lukewarm Laodicean spiritual condition that would be lost if Jesus came today.

Lastly, we must agree that God has given us above and beyond what we deserve. In Revelation, Jesus promises to come again and give the faithful righteous their reward of eternal life. “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to everyone according to his work.” Revelation 22:12

By faith take hold of the grace and mercy of God. The Holy Spirit gives us the strength and power to stay on the Path of Righteousness through our willingness to obey, exercise faith, and surrender ourselves wholly to Christ. Dedicate your life to Christ by searching the Scriptures and praying as never before.

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” —John 4:24

We can live a Christ-Centered, Bible-Based life! Yes, at times, we will fall. Even so, Jesus promises in Philippians 1:6, to finish the work in us, if we do our part. Because of God’s mercy, your name will be listed in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Your name will be alongside Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Jacob, Moses, Joseph, and Rahab. Our Father God is Loving, Gracious, and Merciful!

Prayer: God, thank You for Your love, grace, and mercies. We repent of our many sins and surrender our hearts and lives to You. Yes, we desire to worship You for the rest of our days. Even so, Come, Lord, Jesus. In Jesus’ Holy name, we pray, Amen!
