Reaching Peak Performance

Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearances with those of the young men who are eating the royal food…Daniel 1:12-13

In 2004, I purchased a pre-owned, garage kept 2003, Mercury Grand Marquis. The vehicle was fully loaded with only 13,000 miles. What impressed me the most was when the salesman lifted the hood, the V8 engine was immaculate and purred like a kitten. Also, the previous owner kept a maintenance log which indicated that the car was highly valued and well-cared for.

I was a single woman living in New Jersey and concerned about finding a reputable mechanic. My cousin recommended one of their friends who was self-employed as a mechanic. After receiving the address, I decided to make a visit to set up a routine checkup before I traveled out of state. Once he finished checking out the car, the mechanic told me to do two things to keep my car in peak performance: 1.) Use synthetic oil and premium gas. 2.) and to take care of your vehicle like you take care of yourself. When I sold my car in 2017, she had over 180,000 miles, new tires, and the ability to travel for another 100,000 miles.

Besides politics, there is also another subject that ranks in the top 5 controversial topics, a healthy diet. Many individuals become defensive regarding their food intake, especially if their diets are unhealthy. My childhood diet consisted of healthy meals, plenty of fruits, and veggies, but there were always desserts and fried foods.  I received a weekly allowance, which allowed me to walk to the corner store and purchase enough candy to last for a week. The downside to my habit was that I became addicted to candy, and became a victim of childhood obesity at the age of 11.

I continued to eat candy on a regular basis, but not every day. The extra, empty calories added up and my weight began to increase. At my annual checkup, my physician commended me on maintaining a stable blood pressure, but at 42, she was concerned about my abnormal BMI. The visit extended into a lengthy one, because she took a complete nutritional history, and provided education on making healthy changes that would impact my future.

You, however, are controlled not by the flesh but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. Romans 8:9

When I read Romans 8:9, I now realize that my Doctor was addressing appetite from a spiritual perspective. “We do not let our appetites control us and eat foods that ruin our bodies,” was her final word of advice as I left her office. Twenty years have passed, and I can still remember that visit as if it happened yesterday.

“The foods you eat have big effects on your health and quality of life.” (Mawer, 2016)

WE can Retrain our minds and our tastebuds!

Many of us are following the Stay-at-home protocols and have extra time on our hands. We can utilize this time to make much-needed changes in our lifestyle. Incorporating nutritious foods such as legumes, vegetables, and fruits can jumpstart the metamorphosis to a new and improved you. Fresh seasonings provide additional flavors, make your own salad dressings, and nondairy ice cream desserts. This is the perfect time to drink 1 gallon of water every day (unless you have cardiac or renal issues). The detoxing of unneeded junk foods will propel your body into a healing stage.

Believe that the body and mind respond well to healthy eating. The cognitive abilities are enhanced, the mood becomes stabilized, and the level of energy increases. The cells, tissues, and organs will thrive from receiving the nutrients that they rightfully deserve.

The best decision that I ever made was to give up my candy addiction and all sugary foods. Choosing a plant-based diet has forced me to rechannel my excess energies, especially since the shut-in. Although I read a lot of professional articles, I still maintain a balance by singing, exercising, crafting, and playing online mind-boggling games. The LORD is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving. Psalm 28:7

We have an obligation to God to care for our bodies. God created us in His image. If we so choose, yes, we can change our nonproductive habits. Pray and ask God to give you the strength to obtain an optimal level of wellness.

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:14

Stay at home. Pray without ceasing. Study the Bible. Preparing for Eternal life one day at a time.
