How is this possible?

But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, Jacob, and formed you, Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine. Isaiah 43:1

Many years ago, I worked with a nurse who had been raised in an orphanage owned by a church. Unfortunately, the children were physically and emotionally abused daily by those entrusted to care for them. As she relayed the events of her childhood through the age of 18 when she aged out of the institution, she felt that her life would never have real meaning. A failed marriage without children compounded the situation and left her without hope for the future.

When she completed sharing the events of her life, Nurse N. took out her cellphone and asked, “Can I show you something?” As I looked through the pictures of many acrylic and watercolor paintings, I realized that she was a brilliant and talented artist. Being a lover of art, I was amazed at her innate level of talent. N’s story continued of how she discovered her talent by watching a televised series of an artist. One day she picked up a pencil and began to draw on a scrap piece of paper. And that was the beginning of a journey to express her painful past of emotional turmoil.

But there was something that did not add up, her paintings reflected beauty, hope, and an optimistic future. I remained silent as I handed the cellphone to Nurse N. “I know that my paintings do not reflect the terrible things that I experienced in life, but my work expresses the peace and happiness that I wish for, and I know that there has to be something more in life because I can see that it exists in people like you.” At that point, Nurse N. asked me to tell her about God.

God’s Divine intervention was evident that night because the Psych Unit was unusually quiet, and the patient’s slept throughout the shift. We experienced downtimes, to reflect on God, chat about our hobbies, and our future desires. I can remember that our conversation about God lasted for about three hours. Nurse N. had many questions regarding God, thankfully, I had my Bible and was able to use scriptures to validate the answers she was seeking.

My response to anyone that asks me about my personal experience with God will receive the same answer: “God is my Heavenly Father.” When I reflect on my life from the brokenness and many obstacles throughout six decades of life experience, I can say with conviction, “Only God.” Today, I testify of my transformation and complete healing from the devastation of past events that could have prevented the ability to love God, to love others, and to love myself. If I had little to no dependence on God, then the brutal events of life would have destroyed my ability to move forward. After 25 years of being single, God blessed me with my provider, and my soul-mate, the love of my life, and we are working toward 12 years of marriage.

There are no analytical or rational thought processes that can explain Nurse N’s request to learn about God. Although we worked together for many months, she was introverted, and her habits during downtime were to read paperback books and to eat individually wrapped candy. Nor can I provide a detailed explanation of the healing that I received from all past emotional turmoil, I still say, “Only God.”

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

The time when we are feeling our worst, and the impossibilities in life appear to be the path that we are destined to travel. Stop and pray, “God, I need your help.” This short prayer indicates that through faith, you acknowledge and accept that there is a loving, Heavenly Father that created you and will take care of all of your situations.

And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. Isaiah 65:24

How is this possible? “Only God!”

Here’s to your Health!

We have finally made it through the toilet tissue craze and now another product, All-purpose flour is in short supply because of the overwhelming desire to bake. Strange things happen during a crisis. Now, flour ranks second in the shortage of supply and demand. The deficit of viable income still exceeds all else during this pandemic.

Why All-purpose flour? An unknown source, most likely a host from a cooking program, recommended baking as a productive activity to alleviate boredom. Many have grasped the idea of learning how to bake homemade foods because the United States has not experienced a flour shortage since World War 2. https://time.com/5836012/flour-shortage-history/

So, aren’t home-baked items healthier than commercially prepared, store-bought items? The answer to that question would be a resounding, “yes” for the majority of individuals who do not have a well-rounded knowledge of flour. There is nothing wrong with baking your bread or snacks. The issue is that All-purpose flour adds lots of calories.

And the recommended foods for baking during the pandemic are: “16 Delicious Ways to Use All-Purpose Flour. Southern-Style Biscuits. Peanut Butter Blossoms. Jelly Thumbprint Cookies. Banana-Nutella Crepes. Banana Bread. Homemade Donuts. Snickerdoodle Cookies. Rosemary Garlic Focaccia.”

Since my diet is very different from the recommended foods, I searched for testimonials of those who have learned the art of baking while staying at home. On social media, I found an honest and straight-forward time-line of events from a Newbie Baker. She relayed that within eight weeks, she could no longer fasten her pants or close button-down tops, and even her stretchy items fit snug. To clarify, she stated that she only baked twice a week because it was still hard work to make items from scratch.

Yes, there are many healthy flours, and I do recommend them if you must bake to get rid of boredom. My preference is still the organic version of the healthy flours–since it is minus the chemical pesticides. This blog has a comprehensive list of alternative flours. https://blog.shawacademy.com/choose-healthy-flour-for-weight-loss-best-tips/

Now, I will share my testimonial regarding flour. Except for “Dave’s Organic Whole grain bread (70 calories per slice) and a few Blue Corn Tortilla chips, I do not use flour or products made with flour, deemed healthy or not. It took me over 2/3rds of my life to overcome and abolish the gnawing desire for high-calorie, high-sugar content, and high-fat foods to transition to a plant-based healthy lifestyle.

I decided to do some research while I was writing this blog. The Blue Corn chips that I love and munch on in my spare time are not my friends. The information on the label almost made me throw my bag of chips away. Per the manufacture, a serving size is 28g. Okay, can you translate 28g into the number of chips in the 140 calorie count, and calories from fat–54, with saturated fat comprising 3%? And saturated fat is the fat that causes clogged arteries.

Oh my! But wait, I found the answer, 14 chips=28g. My solution is to take seven triangular shaped chips and break them into four pieces each, and that will give me 28 mini pieces for my snack.

Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food. Genesis 1:29

My body does not belong to me; therefore, I can no longer do as I desire, especially in my quest for food. Since following a plant-based diet, my mind and body have responded in a manner that I never thought possible. Yes, a weight loss of 50+ lbs stabilized my chronic illnesses. Even so, it is my mental acuity and energy level that has improved beyond what I ever thought was possible. My memory has shown significant improvement, and I have the desire to study the Bible because I do not feel sluggish. I also have several little talks with God in prayer throughout the day. Never stop praying. 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well. Psalm 139:14

God allowed me to view a physician on youtube, Matthew Weiner, MD that advocated a plant-based diet for his patients. He is a bariatric surgeon specializing in gastric sleeves, etc. However, the exciting aspect of his practice is that Dr. Weiner does weight loss management without surgical intervention. In his book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works, he recommends eating 1 lb of leafy green vegetables a day.

Because I only eat two meals daily, in the recommended portion sizes, and 1-2 small snacks, only if I feel peckish, I am unable to eat 1 lb of cooked green vegetables every day. However, I do include one or two leafy or green veggies, fresh kale, spinach, broccoli, green beans, and collards in my daily intake. For some reason, there is never a shortage of these veggies in the supermarket.

To say that my mouth does not water at the sight and smell of fried chicken wings or the thin slices of a corned beef sandwich, it would not be the truth. But, when I look in the mirror and see a smaller waistline, and wake up every morning feeling great, I think about the blessing of finally achieving excellent health. There are still a couple of areas that I need to overcome to have an optimal level of health, and I strive daily to do my part in caring for my temple.

You can retrain your tastebuds!

I will reserve my blue corn chips for twice a month and return to my thin sliced cucumber chips or celery sticks for those peckish times. God has given us the ability to make positive changes to achieve our optimal level of health, which differs for each individual.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 1 Corinthians 6:19

Here’s to your health!

Bible Reading: Daniel 1

Heavenly Father, we thank you for creating us in your image and with the ability to make positive choices and changes in our lifestyles. Please give us the strength to cast aside all harmful foods and to appreciate the gift of our wonderfully made bodies. We ask this prayer in the Worthy Name of Jesus. Amen.

20 Most Beautiful Islands In The World

Have you heard?

Have you heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. Isaiah 40:28 NLT

There is a word that a former Pastor used to describe our tumultuous journey full of trials and tribulations in life; Vicissitudes–a change in circumstances that is unwelcome and unpleasant. Yes, the vicissitudes of life can be life-altering, challenging, and leave us feeling as if we are in a turbulent storm without an endpoint.

The tribulations of life often produce major life events with devastating effects that last for a very long time. We may feel that we cannot move forward. Where does that leave us? We are left with only one option, and that is God. It takes prayer for the renewal of our strength. In our walk with God, we must become entirely dependent as a little child is on its parents.

Our Heavenly Father would never leave us or forsake us. If you are thinking, “Why would God allow this to happen in my life if He loved me so much?” The answer to your question is in the Bible, God’s Holy Word. Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he give us everything else? Romans 8:32 NLT

When Jesus was on the cross, he despaired and cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”  In his humanness, Jesus felt abandoned by His Father as he hung on the cross. But, God had other plans for His Son: Resurrection from death! On that Sunday, our Jehovah Jireh sent an angel to roll away the stone from the tomb that could no longer hold the Lamb of God. Matthew 28:2.

Following Jesus’ resurrection, the eleven disciples met him at the mountain in Galilee. Although they recognized and worshiped Jesus, some were filled with disbelief that it was really Jesus. Would you have been one of those who were filled with doubt?

And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, “All power is given unto me in heaven and on earth. Matthew 28:18. Jesus gave reassurance to the doubters that He was not only the risen Savior, but they were to continue the work of teaching and making new disciples until He comes again. As disciples, we are to fulfill the same work. The Great Commission, Matthew 28:18-20

Have you heard? Our Spiritual team–God the Father, Jesus his Son, and the Holy Spirit are always here. Even before they call, I will answer, and while they are still speaking, I will hear. Isaiah 65:24. Never stop praying. 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Have you heard? …And be sure of this: I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Matthew 28:20. Amen.

Bible Reading: Matthew 28

God, we are suffering from the hardships in life, and we ask you to give us the courage to fully believe in you and to move forward in our lives. Amen.

Have you considered this? Chapter 2

Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 1 Corinthians 1:27

It is Tuesday, May 12, 2020. Since Mother’s Day, 5/10/2020, there are 50,392 new cases of the Coronavirus in the United States, and the death rate has reached 79,756. The current numbers: Total Cases: 1,324,488 and Total Deaths: 79,756.

Did we have to experience a pandemic within a pandemic? The most effective measure of curtailing the COVID-19 virus was to practice Stay-at-Home and Shelter-in-Place measures. Currently, there are no vaccines or pharmacological medications that can effectively prevent or treat Coronavirus. Nevertheless, many individuals are not doing their part to prevent the spread of this disease.

But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them, and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. 1 Corinthians 2:14

If a child receives instructions from their parents to “Stay-at-Home,” the directive is understood. Either they have a choice to do what is right and to obey, or to willfully disobey and suffer the consequences. So why are so many individuals disregarding the most effective measures of staying at home and social distancing?

For those who view human life through the eyes of mathematical figures or dollar signs, just for a moment, let’s stretch our imagination and look through their eyes in an attempt to understand their mindset. In 2019, there was an estimated number of 328.2 million people in the United States, and compared to the total number of Coronavirus Cases and Total Deaths, only 0.65% of the total population is affected. Now we understand the willingness to sacrifice human life, the statistics have not even reached 1% of the total U.S. population.

A question that most people never ask themselves is, “What if I am wrong?” Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

The outcome for those who possess pride is fixed, and it leads to destruction. Pride is the catalyst that makes us doubt and disobey God. Pride destroys our relationship with God by leading us to believe that our decisions will produce the best outcomes. As we separate ourselves from the source and reject spiritual guidance, we engage in self-destructive behaviors that guarantee the loss of Eternal life.

Pride is the most vicious of all character traits, it abolishes all love and compassion for others, and causes us to disregard the value of humanity.

At times, I reflect on the events that have shaped my life experience. One of the most significant is the 12 years that I persevered to obtain my nursing degree. The one person who etched a permanent memory was our first-semester Clinical Professor. Instructor. Professor Betty* had a mouth so vicious that we immediately took a dislike to her, and we prayed that the schedule of four days a week, seven hours a day for 16 weeks, would end quickly. On the first day of class, we listened to an introductory speech that filled us with fear. I can recall our Professor telling us to take a good look at each other because only half of us would make it through the nursing program.

The weeks passed slowly, and during the semester, our nursing professor lived up to her reputation, especially following the grading of an exam. The following day we would review the correct answers and the rationale for all questions answered incorrectly. She would begin by laughing and stating her favorite phrase, “Let’s see how many patients you have killed by what you thought was the right thing to do.”

Before the third review, the students with strong personalities made the decision that they were not going to take our Professor’s bad attitude any longer and made a plan to confront her as soon as we received our graded exams that morning. Although, I was not included in the “Strong Ones” group because they were aware that I was a Christian, one of my classmates disclosed earlier that morning that something terrible was going to happen in class. Our Professor listened to the complaints regarding her demeanor and laughed, she told us that her responsibility to produce nurses who would do no harm to their patients did not include students liking her as a person.

We struggled to maintain our dignity and self-respect during review time by attempting to justify our incorrect answers. Little did we realize that our wounded pride and well-meaning rationales could produce deadly outcomes. Our Instructor remained steadfast and responded, “If you took that action, then your patient would either suffer serious adverse effects, or they would die.”

The percentage of failures from the program far exceeded our Professor’s prediction of 50%. Only 26% of the initial enrollees graduated from the rigorous RN program in Upstate New York. 27 students excitedly began the Clinical program, but the severity of the program required intense study and memorization of countless diseases. The ability to apply astute judgment, and critical thinking skills along with performing best practice measures, in a hospital setting, with the eyes of Nursing Professors monitoring your actions took its toll. Seven nursing students survived the sacrificial demands of a program that was developed to break down and rebuild for the purpose of serving patients with acute, chronic, and terminal illnesses physically, and mentally.

As the seven of us quietly waited in the Student Lounge to complete our Exit Interviews, we reflected on our journey and embraced each other for the final time as Student Nurses. On that bitterly cold December day, one by one, we left the building to take our victory walk as Graduate Nurses to the icy parking lot reserved for students. However, the journey was not complete. We had another hurdle, and that was to pass our State Licensure Exam. The NCLEX examination further eliminated those who could not use astute nursing judgment and critical thinking skills for their clinical practice. Only five of us passed the exam and actively practiced nursing until retirement.

Although Professor Betty* had poor interpersonal skills, I am thankful for my first semester Clinical Professor who went above and beyond. Yes, she taught us nursing theory, critical thinking skills, and nursing judgment. However, she taught us to assess each patient and to listen to their personal report of the history and symptoms that they experienced. We also learned never to assume and to factor in that patients with the same disease may have different symptoms.

Our skills increased to anticipate the possibility that a situation can quickly change from bad to critical. Our Professor taught us to use our five senses as the tools to ensure that patient safety was our first priority in every interaction with our patients. The answer to this question, “Will my interventions provide best practice, safety and prevent harm to the patients that I am caring for?” always had to be a resounding yes.

For those of us who became Registered Professional Nurses, we realized that Professor Betty* was not brutal. She was the necessary instrument used to reshape the minds of students into healthcare professionals that took an oath to practice the ethical principle of nonmaleficence– to do no harm. Just FYI: All of the rebellious students eventually failed the nursing program because of their resistance to learning and the inability to use astute nursing judgment and critical thinking skills.

My perspective of life changed during the nursing program. Yes, I was keenly aware that humanity is created in the image of God, but it was when I graduated and became licensed to practice nursing that I grew in awe of the love that our Heavenly Father has for us.

For the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. Job 33:4

Validate who you are and who you belong to by making the commitment to pursue positive changes in your life! By staying safe, we give honor to God!

To empower oneself involves making conscious decisions and implementing measures for improvement. Achievements do not happen quickly, they are the result of desire and perseverance. The desire to learn, to receive knowledge, and apply said experience to your life is an ongoing process and should continue throughout your lifespan. There are character traits that you must possess for self-improvement; love for God, faith, trust, obedience, and patience. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest (of blessings) if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

We have reached a crossroads in our lives. There is a decision that we must make to move forward. Whether we accept the journey and adapt to create New Normals, which promote our safe-keeping or stand still, looking in retrospect, it is a choice that will improve our status or eventually destroy us.

The COVID-19 is an unknown virus that will require many interventions that may not give the desired outcome. But we do not give up and do nothing. We keep striving to find methods to curtail the tsunami effect of the Coronavirus. Without God, we do not see the endless possibilities, nor do we have the desire to struggle and become victorious.

Abolish the mindset that there are no other options in life. Change is always possible. We must destroy the mental roadblock that has us running in place. Pray and ask God to show you creative ways to develop a modified lifestyle. The desire for self-preservation is fueled by loving God, loving others, and loving yourself.

To place yourself in harm’s way by desiring a [prior life is an intentional action. Change requires thinking outside of the box, pursuing knowledge, and praying for the gift of wisdom. James 1:5 tells us, “If you ask for Wisdom, God will give it generously without finding fault: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

Asking yourself, “What if I am wrong?” releases preconceived notions and gives the freedom to escape from making counterproductive decisions. Pray and ask forgiveness for wayward thoughts and harmful practices. Pray for guidance, God is full of grace and mercies. God will give you wisdom and show you how to develop a new way of thinking and to live safely with positive outcomes.

We can prepare ourselves one day at a time for Eternal life by thanking and honoring God for making our bodies and minds as a replica of His image. God is here, and He is lovingly waiting for you and me to approach His Throne of Grace.

Prayer: God, we thank you and ask for the wisdom to develop the necessary changes in our lifestyles that reflect your plan for us. In Jesus’ Name, we ask this prayer. Amen.
